Dr. Will Halstead is back at Gaffney — and he’s facing his own crisis.
For Wednesday’s 200th episode of Chicago Med, original cast member Nick Gehlfuss made his long-awaited return as Will — and he’s a daddy-to-be! Since leaving Gaffney to be with Natalie in Seattle at the end of Season 8, the pair is stronger than ever. With Natalie 20 weeks pregnant, Will took Owen back to Chicago for some quality time together. (More on that later…)

But a visit to Gaffney is never without complication. While in the parking lot, Will finds a very sick kid. Naturally, he takes charge of the boy’s care, and it doesn’t take long to determine that the boy is suffering from a bowel obstruction. But by the time Will prepares a treatment plan, the boy has disappeared, leaving behind only a pile of vomit containing a little blue balloon; the boy is a drug mule who’s transporting 59 bags of cocaine via his stomach.
Despite all the heroism from Will — carrying the boy into the hospital, retrieving him from a locked bathroom, and encouraging him to continue his care — Goodwin tells the doctor that he’s got to lay off. He isn’t employed by this hospital anymore. But Will wants to keep treating this guy so he can continue to avoid spending time with that guy, Owen, with whom Will is struggling to connect. Goodwin encourages the doctor to go act like a parent — he can’t just run away at the first sign of adolescent angst!
Meanwhile, everyone knows about Hannah’s pregnancy now, and the hospital staff has even adopted the “Dasher” ‘ship name. (How meta!) Will congratulates Hannah, revealing she and Archer were not on his bingo card this year. (Same, Will, same!)
Since the pregnancy is no longer a secret, Ripley and Archer are now free to bicker publicly, and bicker publicly they will. They treat a man facing a very Materialists problem: The scars from his limb-lengthening surgery, meant to make him taller for his online girlfriend, are now infected. (Shocker!) The two doctors disagree over how to address the problem: Ripley thinks they should replace the man’s leg implants, while Archer believes the internal rods need to be removed, thus making the man short again. (Of course, none of their arguing has anything to do with Hannah or her pregnancy!)
Once in the operating room, the men’s disagreement comes to a head in dramatic fashion — literally! They formally face off in costume (aka Hazmat suits) like a couple of Real Housewives at a Halloween soirée. Luckily, like any good Housewife, the boys soon overcome their spat and solve this medical crisis together. In fact, hammering away at that guy’s bones helps these two make some serious headway: Ripley congratulates Archer on the baby.
The episode doesn’t end on such a light note: The OR treating the drug mule boy is being held at gunpoint by a woman demanding those cocaine-filled balloons. Emboldened by her deadly diagnosis, Lenox takes charge and confronts the gunwoman, who ultimately flees the room.
But before the credits roll, we hear gunshots out in the lobby, and we see Natalie, back in Seattle, receiving a phone call; Owen has been shot.

From one #OneChicago tragedy to another, Fire opens up with the team facing a fiery emergency — and Vasquez once again fails to wait for orders from Kidd before risking his life to prevent a gas tank explosion. Yes, the bad boy saves the unit, and no, Kidd isn’t happy about it! But things get even more complex when we learn the bad apple doesn’t fall too far from the bad dad tree — Vasquez’s father is serving time in the penitentiary, but we have yet to learn why.
Elsewhere, Ritter tells Violet and Novak that he met Dwayne’s entire family after he visited his ex in the hospital during last week’s premiere. Though Ritter attempts to self-sabotage a possible reconciliation with Dwayne, Violet encourages her friend to try to make things work. Ritter takes her words to heart, and soon reveals he’ll be leaving the CFD in an “extended furlough” in order to go be with Dwayne in New York City. (Aw!)
In other news, Stella and Severide are officially becoming parents as they welcome a foster child, Isaiah, into their home. Though things are a bit awkward for the new trio at first, Severide looks very comfortable bonding with Isaiah over video games by the episode’s end.

Chicago P.D. focuses much of Episode 2 on Torres, who is still in the bad place we left him in the Season 12 finale. Though he looks physically and emotionally rundown, he seems to be seeking purpose as he becomes engrossed in a case that hits close to home after a man from his own neighborhood gets violently abducted. Though the man’s wife refuses to cooperate out of fear for her family’s safety, Torres isn’t willing to back down; he takes charge of the investigation, but ultimately finds the man tied to a warehouse pole, murdered.
The investigation continues, leading the Intelligence Unit to a storage facility. There, Torres runs down the suspect, and finds himself in a violent rooftop showdown. For a moment, it looks like Torres’ own desire for revenge will get the best of him. He cocks his gun in the perp’s direction, promising he’ll make it quick. But then, Atwater shows up to deescalate the situation and apprehend the suspect. The two share a vulnerable exchange — as vulnerable as Torres allows — where Atwater encourages his friend to move on. Later, Torres admits prayer no longer works for him, so he’s been harming himself to feel something. By the end of the episode, he seeks solace by hooking up with a semi-sadistic tattoo artist — perhaps that’s progress?
