A$AP Rocky has unleashed the chaotic visual for his latest single, Punk Rocky, and within seconds it became clear that this wasn’t going to be a sit-back-and-nod-along affair. This was punk theatre, Tim Burton, coded madness, and Rocky at his most delightfully feral.
The video opens on an oddly calm note: Winona Ryder sprawled on a plastic lounge chair, unbothered and statuesque, while her extremely muscular partner paces nearby, yelling into his phone like the human embodiment of bad vibes. Enter Rocky, rolling out of a garage with hair rollers still in place, because why not?before diving straight into a mosh pit where chaos reigns supreme and he promptly takes a punch to the face. Glamour, but make it bruised.
Things escalate quickly. The cops arrive, Rocky and his crew are rounded up, and the camera lingers lovingly on his swollen, half-shut eye as it somehow continues to rap. In a surreal twist, Ryder later ambles over to offer Rocky a plate of cookies, domestic kindness amid total anarchy. Naturally, her partner doesn’t take kindly to this and completely loses it, triggering another arrest and a trip to the police station. Mugshots are taken, bars clang shut, and Rocky performs from behind jail bars, casually throwing money at an elderly lawyer like it’s spare change.
The madness peaks with Rocky sprinting through the streets, firing a gun into the air, only to end up back in a cop car, this time catapulting through the rear window in a final, cartoonish escape attempt.
With appearances from Ryder and Danny Elfman—both Burton collaborators, and Thundercat adding to the off-kilter energy, the video feels like a punk-rock cousin of Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands. It’s a wild preview of Rocky’s upcoming album, Don’t Be Dumb, dropping January 16, with Tim Burton himself designing parts of the artwork and an accompanying film.
