It’s time to play the music!
It’s time to light the lights!
It’s time to meet the Muppets on “The Muppet Show” tonight!
Jim Henson’s band of puppet misfits is returning 50 years after the show premiered in 1976.
Seth Rogen and his creative partner Evan Goldberg are executive producers of a new Muppets special that could become the pilot to a revival series, multiple outlets report.
The Muppets will be staging a variety show in their return, much like the original series.
The Disney+ special is set to mark the 50th anniversary of “The Muppet Show” in 2026.
Grammy-winning pop star Sabrina Carpenter will be a guest star and producer on the special, Variety reports.
Albertina Rizzo (“The Tonight Show”) is writer and executive producer of the Muppets return.
“Wild to have a dream since childhood come true in 2025, but here we are,” she said on Instagram. “Grateful to everyone who helped make it happen.”
Tony winner Alex Timbers (“Alex Edelman: Just For Us,” “Moulin Rouge! The Musical”) is the director and another executive producer.
“A dream to be directing this, with a team of great creatives, producers, and performers,” he said on Instagram.
“The Muppet Show” ran from 1976 to 1981 and much longer in syndication.
The show was beloved for its winning characters like Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear and Animal, who mingled with celebrity guests like New Jersey’s Debbie Harry of Blondie, Johnny Cash, Diana Ross and many more.
Original Muppet talent is returning in the new special.
Dave Goelz, who was there from the beginning, playing Gonzo, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Waldorf and others, will be back.
Joining him will be longtime Muppet performers Bill Barretta (Rowlf, The Swedish Chef, Pepe the King Prawn), Peter Linz (Statler), Eric Jacobson (Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, Sam Eagle), Matt Vogel (Kermit the Frog, Camilla the Chicken) and David Rudman (Scooter, Beaker, The Swedish Chef).
