NEED TO KNOW

  • Anne Hathaway opened up to PEOPLE in an exclusive interview about whether or not she’d ever make a career change and become a pop star after portraying one in Mother Mary

  • The actress sought advice from Charli xcx, who worked on the soundtrack for the movie, and the choreographer Dani Vitale to get in the pop star mindset while filming

  • Mother Mary is in theaters now

Anne Hathaway isn’t exactly looking to trade in an Oscar for a Grammy.

In her new film, Mother Mary, Hathaway, 43, stars as a pop star making her grand return through a tour. When she reunites with costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel), the cracks in their relationship begin to show, kicking off the tension in the psychological thriller.

Walking the red carpet at the Metrograph in New York City for a special screening of the film on April 13, Hathaway exclusively told PEOPLE that when it comes to the possibility of a pop star career change for herself, it isn’t on her radar.

“I can’t see that happening,” she admitted.

Still, Hathaway did get into a pop star mindset while filming the movie, as she sought out advice from Charli xcx, who worked on the soundtrack for the film, and the choreographer Dani Vitale.

Both, the Oscar Award-winning actress said, were “able to give me a lot of insight.”

“I wanted to talk to her about the music. She wrote such amazing music that I was going to perform,” Hathaway said, referring to Charli, 33.

She added, “But I also just had a lot of questions for her about what her life was like, what the experience of being a pop star was.”

“And the thing that I just realized about pop stars is they’re endurance athletes who can do it all in platform heels,” continued Hathaway. “They are the most charming people on the planet, and they have this crazy self-belief.”

“Like, they’re so driven to share what’s inside of them, and it kind of made me realize that I’m really an actress because I like to share what’s inside of me through a filter,” the star further explained. “I don’t like to just go out there and be like, ‘Hey, I’m here.’ I like to do it through a filter or a veil.”

This year is a big one for Hathaway — who is PEOPLE’s cover star for the 2026 World’s Most Beautiful issue.

Along with her role in Mother Mary, she is reprising her character of Andy Sachs for The Devil Wears Prada 2.

Once an assistant to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the sequel finds Andy all grown up and crossing paths with Miranda years later.

Also starring in the highly anticipated sequel are Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, who both reprise their roles from the original, as well as new additions that include Simone Ashley, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak and Pauline Chalamet, to name a few.

“I loved making the first,” Hathaway told PEOPLE of The Devil Wears Prada, which came out in 2006.

“I know I was stressed and anxious and all those things, but it’s one of the most hilarious experiences ever because of the people I was with,” she added.

“Emily Blunt is such a dream of a human being. Stanley is so funny and quick, and Meryl, I don’t talk about how much I revere her to her, but I do,” continued Hathaway. “She’s someone I admire. Someone who defines how it’s done. Somebody who is just living greatness and never rests on that laurel, but is always pushing herself to expand as an artist. She’s unbelievable.”
