New Music Friday: 5 Songs You Need to Hear This Week (6/5)

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

YOUNG FRESH FELLOWS – “I’M A PRISON”

Scott McCaughey’s long-running indie rock cult band Young Fresh Fellows will release brand new album Loft as a Record Store Day Black Friday exclusive. It’s loaded with guestsincluding Neko Case, Camper Van Beethoven’s Jonathan Segel, Peter Buck and more.

ANJIMILE – “AULD LANG SYNE II”

Anjimile is back with his first new original music since his 2023 album The King. He says “Auld Lang Syne II” was “originally intended as something of a wedding present for my best friend, who got married a few years back. During the writing process, though, it transformed into something of a musing on the bittersweet nature of the passage of time – not just for my friend and her husband, but for me and my family and my close relationships.”

—

XSERAPHX – “IN CERTAINTY” & “NEW LIFE TRANSCRIBED”

xSeraphx dropped two new songs via DAZE and fans of late ’90s / early 2000s metalcore should check these out.

—

JOANNA – “BANDIT COUNTRY”

Manchester band Joanna existed in the same scene as The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays but ended up breaking up before getting their due. The band’s unreleased 2989 debut album is finally seeing the light of day on December 5 and you can get a groovy taste now with “Bandit Country.”

—

COLOSSAL RAINS (BLACKLISTED) – “DEADLIGHTS”

Colossal Rains is a new band with core members of Blacklisted (vocalist George Hirsch, David Walling on guitar) and they’re releasing their debut album Feral Sorrow on January 23 via longtime Blacklisted collaborator Will Yip’s label Memory Music. Will also produced the album, and lead single “Deadlights” finds them going in a gritty sludge metal direction.

—

WORMY – “27 DAYS”

NYC’s Noah Rauchwerk, when not playing drums in Samia’s band, makes scrappy indie rock as Wormy and will release new album Shark River on July 16 via Rose Garden. Samia co-produced “27 Days” which he says, “I wrote this about a shortlived relationship I had when I was far away from home. It’s about getting on a plane and flying back to your life after a glimpse into another one. Logistics can really just mess something good up really easily. It’s also about how maybe certain relationships only ever feel right because they aren’t logistically possible.”

FOOTBALLHEAD – “USED TO BE”

Chicago emo-grungesters Footballhead have announced a new album, Weight of the Truth, due March 20 via Tiny Engines. The hard-hitting single “Used To Be” has some real ’90s/early 2000s radio rock vibes.

THE DIVINE COMEDY – “ALL THE PRETTY LIGHTS”

You may not be ready for holiday music just yet but this nostalgic tune from Neil Hannon is pretty nice.

—

DEER TICK – “LIGHT UP REINDEER”

A new holiday tune only in name, old faves Deer Tick return with a song “about the interior conversation you have with yourself when you’re trying to talk yourself away from your darkest thoughts,” says Ian O’Neil who wrote it and handles lead vocals on this one. Hopefully they’ll play it at this year’s New Year’s run in MA & their home state of RI.

It’s the first single from Crooked Fingers’ first album in 15 years. This one features harmonies from Superchunk’s Mac McCaughan.
