Other elements that left me raving? There are plenty of twists (no spoilers here, but *gasp*!). The cameos are so exciting—just like in the first movie, it’s like playing a game of “spot the celeb.” Justin Theroux is fab in the film (and unrecognizable). Lady Gaga doesn’t just perform a big number (and sing the closing credits song), but she gets a juicy scene with Meryl.
And perhaps best of all, we get to see so many more sides to Miranda. In the first movie, we only see her vulnerable once and it’s due to the circumstances of her personal life. Here, we get to see her vulnerable as a result of the evolving publishing industry and how it has affected her professional life. We witness so many more layers of the character in the sequel. I love seeing her ask the question, when is it time to hang it all up?
To summarize, the sequel is great. Haters clearly came in with the wrong attitude and wrong expectations. As I watched, I thought to myself, “honestly, I hope they do a third one.” If they do, let’s just hope it doesn’t take another 20 years.
