Taylor Swift is about to enter her bridal era but a new chapter from her past has come undone after a recent deal her longtime producers Max Martin and Shellback signed.
The 36-year-old pop superstar gained full ownership of her music catalogue last year after a long battle instigated by her nemesis Scooter Braun, but a new hurdle has reportedly emerged.
Martin and Shellback who have worked with Swift on many of her famous hits, have sold their catalogue to HarbourView Equity Partners, and while that doesn’t directly affect the Eras Tour performer’s rights to her music, it could potentially impact the choices she makes about some of her songs.
“HarbourView would not control Swift’s masters generally, but for particular songs in the catalog, it could have approval rights or meaningful leverage that affect how Swift can use those recordings in certain contexts,” attorney Bradfield Biggers told Page Six.
Biggers noted, “But depending on exactly what HarbourView acquired and how the relevant publishing and administration agreements are structured, it could give HarbourView a say in certain uses of songs written with Max Martin, Shellback, or other Wolf Cousins writers.”
However, the deal could effect the Grammy winner when “a particular use requires clearance of both the master recording and the underlying composition, such as a film or TV placement, an ad campaign, certain social-media uses, or other synchronisation opportunities.”
The songs that come under the new deal include Style from 1989 album, and …Ready for It? from Reputation album.
