23 Celebs Who Fumbled Their Careers Horribly

When our favorite actors step out of their usual movie and television roles and pop up in a music video, it always creates a massive pop-culture crossover moment. Sometimes they are there to add intense dramatic weight to a sweeping ballad, and other times, they are just there to goof off, lip-sync, and have a genuinely good time.

Whether they were launching their careers or stepping completely out of their comfort zones as established Hollywood legends, these ten actors delivered iconic performances in less than five minutes of runtime. Grab your headphones, because we are counting down ten of the best celebrity music video cameos of all time.

Christopher Walken in “Weapon of Choice” by Fatboy Slim (2001)

This is the undisputed gold standard of celebrity music video cameos. Directed by Spike Jonze, the video simply features the legendary Christopher Walken tap-dancing and flying his way through an empty Marriott hotel in Los Angeles. Walken actually trained as a dancer in musical theater before becoming an Academy Award-winning actor, and he finally got to show off his incredibly smooth moves to a massive global audience.

Courteney Cox in “Dancing in the Dark” by Bruce Springsteen (1984)

Before she was brewing coffee at Central Perk or fighting Ghostface in Scream, Courteney Cox was just an excited fan pulled on stage by “The Boss.” Directed by Brian De Palma, the video famously ends with Springsteen inviting a fresh-faced Cox out of the front row to dance with him. It was a massive breakout moment that instantly put the young actress on Hollywood’s radar.

Tom Hanks in “I Really Like You” by Carly Rae Jepsen (2015)

Nobody expected two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks to be the face of a bubblegum pop anthem, which is exactly what makes this video so brilliantly funny. Hanks spends the entire video enthusiastically lip-syncing to Jepsen’s vocals as he walks through the snowy streets of New York, signs autographs, and eventually leads a massive, joyful flash mob.

Alicia Silverstone in “Cryin’” by Aerosmith (1993)

Before she completely defined 1990s teen culture as Cher Horowitz in Clueless, Alicia Silverstone was officially the “Aerosmith Girl.” Starring in a trilogy of videos for the rock band (including “Amazing” and “Crazy”), her rebellious, bungee-jumping, belly-button-piercing performance in “Cryin’” turned her into an overnight MTV sensation and a definitive 90s icon.

Pedro Pascal in “Fire Meet Gasoline” by Sia (2015)

Before he was universally beloved as the internet’s favorite father figure in The Mandalorian and The Last of Us, Pedro Pascal brought the heat in this dramatic Sia video. Starring opposite supermodel Heidi Klum, Pascal plays a brooding, passionate lover in a highly cinematic, arson-filled romantic thriller that perfectly showcases his leading-man charisma.

Rupert Grint in “Lego House” by Ed Sheeran (2011)

Leaning heavily into their physical resemblance, the Harry Potter star played the ultimate obsessed fan in Ed Sheeran’s breakout video. Grint spends the runtime dressing exactly like the singer, writing him letters, and eventually storming the stage before being tackled by security. It is a hilarious, perfectly executed bait-and-switch that fans absolutely loved.

Scarlett Johansson in “What Goes Around… Comes Around” by Justin Timberlake (2006)

When Timberlake needed an actress to play a glamorous, destructive femme fatale for his sprawling, nine-minute pop epic, he called in Scarlett Johansson. Fresh off her critical success in Lost in Translation, Johansson brought massive cinematic weight to the mini-movie, which features fiery car crashes, intense arguments, and peak 2000s club fashion.

Danny DeVito in “Steal My Girl” by One Direction (2014)

The sheer absurdity of casting Danny DeVito as an eccentric, visionary music video director for the world’s biggest boy band is exactly what makes this work. DeVito barks orders at Harry, Liam, Louis, Niall, and Zayn from the middle of the desert, commanding them to embody concepts like “danger” and “mystery” alongside sumo wrestlers and a chimpanzee.

Alexander Skarsgård in “Paparazzi” by Lady Gaga (2009)

In one of Lady Gaga’s most theatrical and iconic visual eras, she cast the True Blood heartthrob as her treacherous, eyepatch-wearing billionaire boyfriend. Skarsgård is perfectly cast as the toxic lover who pushes Gaga off a balcony for tabloid fame, only to eventually meet his demise via a poisoned cup of tea. It is high camp, high fashion, and utterly flawless.

Zendaya in “Versace on the Floor” by Bruno Mars (2017)

Sometimes a music video just needs pure, unadulterated star power, and Zendaya delivered exactly that. Dripping in head-to-toe custom gold chainmail, the Euphoria and Dune star spends the video vibing in a neon-lit hotel room next door to Mars. She doesn’t need a complex storyline or heavy choreography; she simply commands the screen with effortless, magnetic glamour.
