Keep warm this week with the various happenings in Brookline. To kick off the week, the Brookline Village Public Library is hosting a group for teens to learn about stitching, while Coolidge Corner Theatre has a seminar about Mira Nair and her film, “Monsoon Wedding,” on Tuesday. Continuing through the week, there will be a celebration of Women’s History Month on Wednesday at the Brookline Village Library. There will also be a poetry night at Brookline Booksmith on Thursday, while ArtsBrookline hosts an open studio for attendees to stop by and learn about art processes and try it out themselves. On Friday and Saturday, Coolidge Corner Theatre will show shorts from the Boston Underground Film Festival. And on Saturday and Sunday, there will be a tale of friendship performed at the Puppet Showplace Theater. Finally, there will be two musical performances on Sunday and another speaker event at Coolidge Corner Theatre.

The Brookline Village Public Library is hosting a group for teens in grades 8-12 to learn about stitching. This event will be no-stakes, and supplies will be provided for the fiber arts group.

Coolidge Corner Seminar: “Monsoon Wedding”
As a part of Coolidge Corner Theatre’s Coolidge Education Program, the theater will host a seminar about director Mira Nair and her film, “Monsoon Wedding.” Nair is regarded as one of the most influential global filmmakers of the Indian diaspora, and has described this film as a “reality check” version of a conventional Bollywood film, as it draws on elements from popular Hindi cinema, while grounding the work with a socially attentive lens. The seminar will be hosted by Dr. Shilpa Parnami, who coordinates the Hindi-Urdu language program and teaches courses on South Asian culture, cinema and literature at Boston University. Celebrating Women’s History Month: Trailblazers by Timing – Activists by Choice
This celebration honors the women who fight for social, legal and political equality, and those who have effected change in the United States. Third Thursdays Poetry: Natalya Sukhonos & Heidi Seaborn
For this in-person event at Brookline Booksmith, poets Natalya Sukhonos and Heidi Seaborn will be hosting this evening of poetry. Sukhonos is multilingual, speaking Russian, English, Ukrainian, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian, and holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from Harvard University. Earlier this month, she released her third book, “Sunlight Trapped in Stone.” Seaborn is Executive Editor of “The Adroit Journal” and winner of “The Missouri Review” Editors Prize in Poetry. Her third poetry book, “tic tic tic,” was published by Cornerstone Press last September.

During this open studio, visitors can stop by to make a print, enjoy a demonstration on how to craft beaded earrings or simply chat with working artists and makers about their process. Refreshments will be available, and kids are welcome.

Boston Underground Film Festival: I Hate It Here (Midnight Shorts)
As part of the Boston Underground Film Festival, Coolidge Corner Theatre will be showing the weirdest, wildest, goriest and darkest shorts their programming team could find. Many of these short films offer bleakly funny commentary on contemporary societal ills, while others prioritize creepy atmosphere or body horror. Some of the shorts featured in this program will be “What Are Grandchildren Made Of?” and “It’s Not Me.” These shorts will be shown in programs on both Friday and Saturday.

The Dragon’s Laugh + Other Tales by Midnight Radio Show
The Puppet Showplace Theater presents a show of enchanting fairytales. Viewers will join “bona fide fairy princess” Charlotte Lily Gaspard on her adventures, which will be accompanied by songs by Midnight Radio Show. In one story, a dragon and a fairy become friends, despite disapproving families, and when complications ensue, the companions must go on a quest together as they prove that friendship can be found anywhere and with anyone.

The Brookline Music School faculty and guest artists will perform in a concert of film favorites at the Brookline Village Public Library this Sunday. The performers will be Luis Ibanez on violin, Jorge Ibanez on piano and Deborah Ibanez on percussion. This event is free, but a prior RSVP is required.

Reflections, a new voice-viola music duo, will perform their debut concert, “Impressions and Reflections,” at United Parish on Sunday. The show will include music by Jessica Meyer and Joe St. Johanser, as well as three new works by local composers Kevin Lubin, morima and Joey Timmons. Student tickets are free, and the general admission cost is $15.

Coolidge Corner Theatre will host a post-film discussion with “André is an Idiot” director Tony Benna on Sunday. This documentary follows André Ricciardi, a self-deprecating, witty and successful San Francisco advertising executive, after he learns that he has stage 4 colon cancer at age 52, and he regrets he waited too long for a procedure that might have saved his life.
