15 Actors Who Turned Down Major Movie and TV Roles

A single role can change an actor’s career, but Hollywood history is full of near-misses. Actors pass on parts because of scheduling conflicts, creative concerns, contracts, or timing.

These 15 stars turned down major roles, leaving fans to imagine how different the movies and shows might have been.

Matt Damon as Jake Sully

Openverse

15. Matt Damon as Jake Sully

Matt Damon has joked that passing on Avatar was one of the worst business decisions an actor ever made. He was offered Jake Sully, the role that went to Sam Worthington, but other commitments got in the way. Since Avatar became one of the highest-grossing movies ever, this remains an expensive “what if.”

John Travolta as Forrest Gump

Openverse

14. John Travolta as Forrest Gump

John Travolta was considered for Forrest Gump before Tom Hanks made the role his own. Travolta passed and starred in Pulp Fiction, so this was hardly a career disaster. Still, it is strange to imagine Forrest with a completely different kind of movie-star energy.

Matthew McConaughey as Ego

13. Matthew McConaughey as Ego

Matthew McConaughey was reportedly considered for Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, a role that went to Kurt Russell. McConaughey instead pursued The Dark Tower, which did not become the franchise starter many expected. Russell fit Ego’s charming, cosmic menace so well that the role now feels hard to recast.

Jack Nicholson as Michael Corleone

Openverse

12. Jack Nicholson as Michael Corleone

Jack Nicholson was considered for Michael Corleone in The Godfather, but he turned it down for a reason that has aged well. He has said he felt Italian actors should play Italian roles, and Al Pacino later delivered one of American film’s defining performances. Nicholson was already a major talent, but this role belonged to Pacino.

Sean Connery

Openverse

11. Sean Connery as Gandalf

Sean Connery was offered Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings, but he reportedly did not connect with the script. The role went to Ian McKellen, whose warmth, authority, and dry wit became central to Peter Jackson’s trilogy. Connery was a legend, but McKellen made Gandalf feel almost impossible to replace.

Viggo Mortensen

Openverse

10. Viggo Mortensen as Wolverine

Before Hugh Jackman became Wolverine, Viggo Mortensen was in the mix for the role. Mortensen has said his son, a fan of the comics, had concerns about the script and helped talk him out of it. Jackman went on to define Wolverine, while Mortensen soon found his own franchise role as Aragorn.

Julia Roberts

Openverse

9. Julia Roberts as Annie Reed

Julia Roberts passed on Annie Reed in Sleepless in Seattle, mostly because of scheduling conflicts. Meg Ryan took the part and helped cement herself as one of the era’s defining romantic-comedy stars. Roberts did just fine, but the Hanks-Ryan pairing became comfort viewing for a reason.

Toshiro Mifune in The Hidden Fortress

8. Toshiro Mifune as Obi-Wan Kenobi

Toshiro Mifune was reportedly offered Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, a choice that makes sense given George Lucas’ samurai-film influences. Mifune declined, with his family later saying he worried the movie might cheapen Japanese cinema. Alec Guinness took the role and gave the Jedi their first sense of mystery and authority.

Eddie Murphy

7. Eddie Murphy as a Ghostbuster

Eddie Murphy was nearly part of Ghostbusters, though the movie changed enough that his role did not simply become someone else’s. Murphy chose Beverly Hills Cop, which became one of his biggest hits. This is less a mistake than a rare Hollywood what-if where both paths worked.

Brian Cox

Openverse

6. Brian Cox as Robert Baratheon

Brian Cox was offered Robert Baratheon in Game of Thrones, but he passed because the character died early. Mark Addy took the role and gave Robert the right mix of faded glory, bitterness, and reckless charm. Cox later became a prestige-TV powerhouse anyway, so missing Westeros did not exactly hurt him.

Liam Neeson

Openverse

5. Liam Neeson as James Bond

Liam Neeson was considered for James Bond in the 1990s, but he turned it down for personal reasons. He has said Natasha Richardson, his future wife, was not interested in marrying him if he became Bond. Pierce Brosnan eventually took over, while Neeson later found his own action-star chapter with Taken.

Harrison Ford

LucasFilms

4. Harrison Ford as Alan Grant

Harrison Ford was offered Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, according to Steven Spielberg, but he passed. Sam Neill played the paleontologist with the right mix of skepticism, warmth, and dinosaur-related exhaustion. Ford already had Indiana Jones, so one Spielberg adventure icon may have been enough.

Emily Blunt

Openverse

3. Emily Blunt as Black Widow

Emily Blunt was in line to play Black Widow before Scarlett Johansson took the role in Iron Man 2. Blunt has said contractual obligations tied her to Gulliver’s Travels, a project she did not want to do. Johansson went on to define Natasha Romanoff, while Blunt became one of Marvel fans’ favorite alternate-casting regrets.

will smith

NBC

2. Will Smith as Neo

Will Smith passed on Neo in The Matrix because the Wachowskis’ unusual sci-fi pitch did not fully land for him. He made Wild Wild West instead, while Keanu Reeves turned Neo into a career-defining role. Smith has been open about regretting the decision, and history did not exactly side with the giant mechanical spider.

Sandra Bullock

Openverse

1. Sandra Bullock as Neo and Trinity

Sandra Bullock was offered The Matrix in more than one form, including a version where Neo would be rewritten as a woman. She was also considered for Trinity, the role that went to Carrie-Anne Moss. Bullock passing kept the film on the path audiences know, but it remains one of the strangest alternate versions of a modern sci-fi classic.

Some rejected roles barely matter. Others reshape careers, franchises, and pop culture. The Matrix still worked without Bullock, but the fact that the studio considered changing Neo so dramatically shows how far Hollywood will go when it wants the right star.
