NEW BERN, Craven County — New Bern leaders are looking into what kind of family entertainment could work in the city long-term.
The city is spending $17,000 on a feasibility study to determine what type of attraction could succeed in the area. The study will look at factors such as household income, family size, how far people are willing to drive and how much they may be willing to spend on entertainment.
Mayor Jeffrey Odham said families in New Bern have long asked for more entertainment options.
“Everybody always says, well, we need something for the family,” Odham said. “We could do this feasibility study, which would help us recruit and hopefully retain some family entertainment, which is obviously needed.”
Odham said the goal is to use the results to attract a private developer.
“The intention is for us to do the study and then we can hand that to someone in the private sector, and then they can open up,” Odham said.
City leaders said taxpayer money is funding the study itself, but any future entertainment center would likely be privately developed and not built with taxpayer dollars.
The study is being conducted by Amusement Entertainment Management, a company based in New Jersey.
The results will help determine what type of family entertainment could be built in New Bern, which could include options ranging from a playground to bowling.
