The movie wasn’t as memorable as the hit. The song was nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars, but lost to “Fame” for Fame. Nelson looked back at the song he quickly wrote on a plane in his book, Energy Follows Thought: The Stories Behind My Songs.
“If someone asked me to write an anthem, I’d freeze,” he wrote, according to American Songwriter. “That’s way above my pay grade. An anthem is too serious for me. I think of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ or ‘America the Beautiful.’”
“On the Road” became an anthem without him trying. But it was also very personal to the writer. “Without knowing or trying, in a few little lines I’d written the story of my life,” he claimed.
The song didn’t win the Academy Award, but it did win a Grammy for Best Country Song. Nelson hasn’t been nominated again. It was later used in many more movies and TV shows.
It’s one of the many songs played during the main character’s run across the country in Forrest Gump. That film won six Oscars, including Best Picture.
