Music’s biggest stars descended on Las Vegas Monday night for the American Music Awards, with K-pop stars BTS walking away as the evening’s biggest victors.
The seven-piece group was crowned Artist of the Year, beating the likes of Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Harry Styles and Lady Gaga to the AMAs’ most prestigious prize. They also won Song of the Summer, for their recent hit “Swim,” and Best Male K-pop Artist.
“We made it once again!” BTS member RM said. He gave his “biggest thanks and gratitude” to BTS fans, adding, “You have stood by us for the past 13 years.”
The group recently returned after taking a hiatus to complete mandatory military service in South Korea.
Swift, who was absent from the ceremony, failed to win in any of her eight categories. The pop star remains the most successful artist in AMAs history, having won 40 awards.
Sabrina Carpenter, another no-show, won Album of the Year and Best Pop Album for Man’s Best Friend, plus Best Female Pop Artist.
Rising star Sombr also claimed three trophies, while Song of the Year went to “Golden” from Netflix animation KPop Demon Hunters. 1980s rock great Billy Idol received a lifetime achievement honor.
Performers on the night included Teddy Swims, the Pussycat Dolls, Hootie & the Blowfish, New Kids on the Block and Twenty One Pilots.
