The cascading consequences of going to bed early

It’s a weekend full of celebrations in The Town. There are so many Juneteenth events we put together a separate roundup. But there is also an outdoor festival — the Montclair Beer Wine and Music Festival — and some wonderful new exhibits such as the “Comrade Sisters,” which tells the story of the Women of the Black Panther Party, plus a concert at a tap room on Father’s Day. Also, both the Oakland Ballers and Oakland Soul have Father’s Day games this Sunday.

Have an event you’d like to see included here? We do our best to stay on top of what’s happening in our community, but we love a tip. Send us a note at [email protected]. You can also use the self-submission form on our events page to add it to our calendar for free.

Hot Ticket in The Town this week: Montclair Beer, Wine and Music Festival

This neighborhood festival now in its 12th year, and Montclair Village will host over 50 craft beverage tastings from wine, beer, and hard cider to non-alcoholic options; tasty bites from neighborhood restaurants; family activities; and performances by Prospect, made up of young musicians from the Oakland School for the Arts; Cardboard People, a Bay Area alt-indie-soul-art pop band; and Venezuelan band Bululú.
Saturday, June 20, 12 to 6 p.m., $58 for single tickets ($68 day of); $200 for a tasting four-pack

Guilhem Fourty Quartet at The Sound Room

French jazz drummer, composer and educator Guilhem Fourty is coming to the Bay Area with his band featuring Jonah Hieb on trumpet, Brahm Sasner on the piano, and Aidan McCarthy on the bass. The quartet will play three Bay Area shows, kicking off in Oakland, then moving onto San Francisco.
Thursday, June 18, 7:30 p.m., $29.58, The Sound Room, 3022 Broadway

‘Comrade Sisters’ exhibit honoring the Women of the Black Panther Party

The book “Comrade Sisters,” co-authored by former Black Panther leader Ericka Huggins and award-winning photojournalist Stephen Shames, came out in 2022. A selection of Shames’ photographs are now on display at the Black Panther Museum through January 2027. The exhibit explores the history of the women part of the party through photos, historical materials, personal stories and first-hand accounts of how they mobilized communities, educated future generations, and carried the Panthers forward despite hardships and gender bias.
Open from Wednesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., free, Black Panther Museum, 1427 Broadway
