Meghan released a massive “photo dump” of 24 unseen wedding pictures to mark eight years since their 2018 wedding in Windsor. The release was split into two carousels of 12 images each – one detailing the daytime ceremony and reception (featuring guests like Sir Elton John and King Charles), and the other showcasing the intimate night-time reception, complete with shots of the couple dancing and kissing on the dancefloor.
An initial posting blunder was quickly corrected. When the first photo carousel went live at midnight US time (8:00 AM UK time), eagle-eyed fans noticed an embarrassing typo in the caption. The text originally read: “Either years ago today… [gold-moon emoji].” Within minutes, the mistake was spotted and corrected to read “Eight years ago today…”
Critics and royal commentators blasted specific photos. The throwback photos drew significant criticism from royal experts and fans alike. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said one of the reception photos showing a passionate kiss as “ghastly” and remarked that they “look like a couple of drunks” and that the image “should have been redacted.”
Fans noticed two major snubs in the throwback photos. People closely analysing the 24 images noted that, while family members like Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, and King Charles made appearances, the Prince and Princess of Wales were completely absent from the selection. Observers noted that despite William and Catherine being core figures at the 2018 wedding, their omission from the anniversary posts highlights the ongoing deep rift and feud between the couples.
Later in the day, Meghan shared a series of personal videos from their home in Montecito, California. The clips featured Prince Harry bringing his wife an elderflower anniversary cake while singing to her, and gifting her a wooden sculpture of two embracing penguins (a nod to a pre-wedding engagement party where they both wore penguin onesies because penguins “are together for life”). Their children, Archie and Lilibet, could be heard cheering in the background. Additionally, Meghan used the anniversary to promote her lifestyle brand, As Ever, sharing another unseen carriage photo and advertising her ‘No. 519’ signature candle, which was named after and inspired by her wedding date (May 19th).
