It was announced that Grammy-winning R&B artist Michael Eugene Archer, better known by his stage name D’Angelo, died after a long battle with pancreatic cancer on Tuesday morning.

Known for shaping the neo-soul movement of the 1990s, D’Angelo rose to fame with his 1995 debut album Brown Sugar, where he blended the genres of R&B, funk and gospel into one record. His 2000 follow-up, Voodoo, featured the iconic hit “Untitled (How Does It Feel),” which earned him widespread critical acclaim and a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. After a 14-year hiatus marked by personal and professional struggles, D’Angelo made a powerful comeback with Black Messiah in 2014.

Many musicians, celebrities, fans, friends and artists flooded social media on Tuesday to express their love and gratitude for the late singer. One of them was Missy Elliott, another popular R&B artist who rose in the early 2000s alongside D’Angelo.

Both emerged from the vibrant music scene of Virginia Beach, which also produced artists like Timbaland and The Neptunes. Their early careers often intertwined and both contributed to the neo-soul and R&B movements of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

“Rest Peacefully D’Angelo🙏🏾🕊️. No parent want to see their children go but it’s painful for children to see their parents go to,” Elliott posted to X. “so send prayers up for his son who also lost his mom this year for strength.”

D’Angelo left behind three children, including his son Michael Archer II, a singer who uses the name Swayvo Twain. Twain’s mother and the late singer’s longtime partner, Angie Stone, passed away suddenly earlier this year in a car crash. Though Stone and D’Angelo broke up in 1999, their relationship was very public, and she was rumored to be the muse behind Brown Sugar.

His family released a statement that was shared with many publications, calling him “the shining star of our family and has dimmed his light for us in this life,” and added that they are “eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind.”

He was 51 years old when he passed.
