If you’re a James Bond fan, you’ll get a kick out of the way Mr. Wolf adjusts his cuffs.
‘The Bad Guys 2’ (IMDb)
In this second part of what is now an animated series, Mr. Wolf (voice of Sam Rockwell) is the leader of a group of friends who once were “The Bad Guys.” Their transformation into good guys is depicted in the first movie.
Both films have a certain spy-ish feel, with double-crosses and action. I particularly enjoyed the scenes where Mr. Wolf, looking spiffy in a suit, adjusts his cuffs a la Daniel Craig in the latest Bond films.
Kids, of course, may not notice that. What they will notice are the colorful characters, fast pace, and chase after chase as our heroes hunt down a villain – a thief whose identity remains a mystery. The criminal is stealing quantities of MacGuffinite … but to what end? (Film aficionados will enjoy this reference.to something sought by characters in a movie.)
In the first movie, Mr. Wolf found romance. This time, Mr. Snake (Marc Maron) has a love interest, a situation that provides some of the humor. He’s suddenly going to the gym and pursuing other self-improvement plans that most likely are a result of his girlfriend’s presence in his life.
The tech-wizard Tarantula (Awkwafina,) nervous Shark (Craig Robinson) and Piranha (Anthony Ramos) are back for the fun, which includes new criminals and revelations about other characters from the first movie.
I could have enjoyed the movie, with its clever dialogue and smart character development, a lot more without an extended body-function joke. Ew. Still, it’s mostly intelligent, with goofy comedy that will appeal to all ages. Grownups shouldn’t assume this is “just for kids” because it’s animated.
It’s a solid romp that will have everyone smiling, regardless of whether you’ve even heard of Bond. And there’s no doubt Part III is on its way.
