Jennifer Aniston has revealed how one of her big-screen roles allowed her to blow off some steam after her very public split from her first husband Brad Pitt.
The former Friends star and Oscar winner were married for five years until they divorced in 2005, and he began dating his former co-star Angelina Jolie shortly afterwards.
Around this time, Jen appeared alongside Vince Vaughn in the romantic comedy The Break-Up, with the two playing a married couple going through a very heated split.
Revisiting the movie as part of a video interview with Vanity Fair, the Emmy winner recalled: “This was so much fun. We had one of the best summers shooting this movie.”
Explaining how many scenes came out of improvised moments between herself and Vince, she continued: “It also allowed for a lot of real conversations that a lot of couples have, which I think is why it hit home for so many people.”

Jen then quipped: “I might have just gone through a separation – that little separation I’m sure nobody remembers – so it was kind of cathartic to go right from that [into this film].
“When they came to me with the offer, they were a little nervous about making the offer, because they thought, ‘is that insensitive? Is that inappropriate?’. But I actually thought, ‘what a great opportunity’.
“I knew it would actually benefit me emotionally, just as a human being, and also serve the script and the character pretty well.”
In her accompanying interview in Vanity Fair magazine, Jennifer also spoke about her previous cover shoot for the US outlet, which was her first interview since her split from Brad two decades ago.
She admitted: “I haven’t looked at that article in forever. I just remember the experience of doing it – which was kind of jarring. It was also such a vulnerable time. But yeah, that was one for the memoirs.
“Journalism back then felt more like a form of a sport. There’s obviously some PTSD we all have, which is why [interviews still] scare me. ‘How are they going to misinterpret my words or take something out of context?’ And one line nowadays [can be taken out of context].”

Asked whether she and her close friend Gwyneth Paltrow ever trade stories about their shared ex, Brad Pitt, Jen remarked: “Oh, of course. How can we not? We’re girls.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Jennifer also made an emotional admission about mourning her friend and former co-star Matthew Perry, as the second anniversary of his death approaches.
