A mashup of filmmaking masters and a lot of face-mashing highlight this week’s new movies in theaters.

Here’s what’s new in Milwaukee-area theaters starting Aug. 15, as well as some of the new movies available on streaming and on demand this week.

‘Highest 2 Lowest’

Short version: In Spike Lee’s “reinterpretation” of Akira Kurosawa’s masterful thriller “High and Low,” Denzel Washington plays a music mogul who is targeted in a kidnapping plot while he’s trying to buy back control of his business. Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera and A$AP Rocky co-star.

Where you can see it: Marcus Theatres’ Bistroplex Southridge, South Shore cinemas; Oriental Theatre. (The Oriental also is showing Kurosawa’s “High and Low” at 9 p.m. Aug. 15 and 7 p.m. Aug. 18.)

‘Nobody 2’

Short version: Now that his family knows who he used to be (and still kinda is), a bare-knuckle-brawling assassin (Bob Odenkirk) decides they all need a vacation. Then his work intrudes on their waterpark vacation. Connie Nielsen, Christopher Lloyd, Colin Hanks and Sharon Stone co-star in this violent action comedy sequel.

‘East of Wall’

Short version: In South Dakota, a young rancher who rescues and resells horses has to decide what’s next after her husband dies and her business — and the young people she rescues/recruits to help run it — face financial hardship. Tabatha Zimiga plays a fictionalized version of herself in this “New Western” filmed on Zimiga’s ranch and written and directed by Kate Beecroft.

‘Americana’

Short version: In this dark comedy, Sydney Sweeney, Paul Walter Hauser and singer-actor Halsey see dollar signs when a rare Lakota Ghost shirt turns up in the black market in their South Dakota town.

Where you can see it: Marcus Theatres’ Majestic, Ridge, South Shore cinemas.

‘Eli Roth Presents: Jimmy and Stiggs’

Short version: After Jimmy goes on a bender, he concludes he was abducted by aliens, and recruits his old friend Stiggs to take them on when they return. Slasher-horror filmmaker Joe Begos wrote, directed and stars in this over-the-top action-horror movie, which counts Eli Roth (“Hostel”) among its producers.

‘Went Up the Hill’

Short version: At the funeral of his estranged mother, a man (Dacre Montgomery) meets her widow (Vicky Krieps) and both try to confront their grief while struggling to break free from the dead woman’s haunting spirit. Filmmaker Samual Van Grinsven shot this atmospheric ghost story in rural New Zealand.

‘Sorry, Baby’

Short version: After a traumatic experience, a woman tries to get her life back, one quirk (and one kitten) at a time. Eva Victor (who also wrote and directed), Naomi Ackie and Lucas Hedges star in this dark indie comedy.

‘The Knife’

Short version: After a White stranger mysteriously appears in their new home, members of a young Black family must deal with the choices they’ve made as a detective sets out to find the truth. Nnamdi Asomugha and Melissa Leo star in this drama.

Where you can see it: Marcus Theatres’ South Shore Cinema.

‘Witchboard’

Short version: In this remake of the 1986 horror movie, a cursed artifact that serves as a portal to the spirit world takes a couple down a dark, dark path.

Silents Synced, which combines classic silent movies with classic albums, presents Buster Keaton’s 1924 masterpiece “Sherlock Jr.” with music from R.E.M.’s “Monster” and “New Adventures in Hi Fi” in special screenings at the Oriental Theatre at 6 p.m. Aug. 16-17. Friday Night Freak Show: ‘V for Vendetta’

Remember, remember to check out “V for Vendetta,” the adaptation of the classic graphic novel about one masked man’s (Hugo Weaving) campaign against tyranny in dictator-controlled Britain. It’s the Friday Night Freak Show for August at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Oriental Theatre. Tickets are $13. Info: mkefilm.org/oriental-theatre.

Musical Mayhem: ‘Blues Brothers,’ ‘Little Shop of Horrors’

Milwaukee Film’s August Musical Mayhem series continues at the Oriental Theatre with “The Blues Brothers” at 7 p.m. Aug. 19 and the 1986 musical “Little Shop of Horrors” at 7 p.m. Aug. 21. Tickets are $13. Info: mkefilm.org/august-musical-mayhem.

‘It’s Not Easy Being Green’ movies: ‘The Muppet Movie’

In August, Milwaukee Film is showing a series of family-friendly green-themed movies (not environmental; the color) in weekend matinees. This weekend, it’s “The Muppet Movie,” at 3 p.m. Aug. 16-17. Tickets are $13 ($7 for kids 12 and younger). Info: mkefilm.org.

What’s showing at Milky Way Drive-In

The Milky Way Drive-In — the outdoor theater in the parking lot at Franklin’s Ballpark Commons, 7035 S.
