J.K. Rowling has reignited her feud with Nicola Sturgeon, mocking her memoir and comparing her to Twilight’s Bella Swan.

The outspoken Harry Potter author took aim at Nicola Sturgeon on X, following the release of the former First Minister’s memoir Frankly this week.

The 60-year-old posted a blistering review on her website, ridiculing Sturgeon’s political focus by likening her to the obsessive heroine of the teenage vampire romance.

“The truth is that Sturgeon, like Bella Swan, is a monomaniac. Both are consumed by a single, overriding ambition. In Nicola’s case, it’s independence for Scotland. In Bella’s, it’s having loads of hot sex with Edward Cullen without getting accidentally killed. Spoiler alert: only one of these ambitions is realised,” Rowling wrote.

This isn’t the first time Rowling has clashed with Sturgeon, particularly over Scotland’s gender identity laws.

In a separate post, she wrote on the book “are you f—— kidding me.”

The author described the book as a “PR statement” and claimed Sturgeon created a “dystopian nightmare” for women during her time in office.

She wrote, “Frankly reads like a PR statement that’s been through sixteen drafts. The best anecdote is on page 120, when Sean Connery teaches Sturgeon an acting trick to lower her voice. But if you’re looking for a more scintillating read, I recommend The Women Who Wouldn’t Wheesht – especially if you want the real low down on the dystopian nightmare Sturgeon’s gender beliefs have imposed on Scottish women.

The feud between Rowling and Sturgeon dates back to 2022, when the Scottish Government introduced the Gender Recognition Reform Bill, which aimed to allow people to change their gender without a medical diagnosis legally, and from the age of 16.

Rowling quickly became one of the bill’s most high-profile critics. That same year, she posted a photo of herself in a T-shirt calling out Nicola Sturgeon as a “destroyer of women’s rights.”

It was a direct jab at Sturgeon’s support for the bill and aligned Rowling with campaigners who argued the reforms endangered women’s spaces and safety.

Sturgeon hit back, saying, “I am a passionate feminist. I’ve spent much of my life campaigning for women’s rights. And I would never do anything to harm women’s rights. What I am trying to do is make life a bit easier for a very small group in our society that is one of the most stigmatised and discriminated against.”

She added, “We don’t have to look very far to see the real threats to women’s rights right now. They come from men who sexually and violently attack women, who try to abuse women in a misogynistic way.”

In her memoir, Sturgeon admits that Rowling’s T-shirt tweet was a turning point – not just in their feud, but in how toxic and personal the public debate became.

She wrote that the backlash that followed was hateful and misogynistic and said it was the moment when “rational debate became impossible.”

The politician also revealed she had received rape threats and cruel trolling online, especially after opening up in the book about her miscarriage.

She said the abuse was tied to her stance on gender identity and her decision to speak openly about her personal life. “It resulted in more abuse, of a much more vile nature, than I had ever encountered before. It made me feel less safe and more at risk of possible physical harm,” she wrote.

She added, “it was deeply ironic that those who subjected me to this level of hatred and misogynistic abuse often claimed to be doing so in the interests of women’s safety.”
