Upload’s Robbie Amell Reflects on [Spoiler]’s Death in Season 4

Robbie Amell discussed the Upload Season 4 finale, saying the journey felt complete.

He explained how the show’s creator, Greg Daniels, shaped the ending and Nathan and Nora’s final moments, where Nathan’s death closed his story. He also shared why it felt true to the narrative.

In a conversation with Us Weekly, Robbie Amell said that he did not receive the finale script until “the day before the table read.”

He recalled, “Sometimes you’re trying to show the emotion of things while you’re shooting them, and other times you’re trying not to, like, sloppy cry while you’re reading a scene. And that was kind of the series finale for Upload. I thought that [showrunner] Greg [Daniels’] words were so beautiful. I couldn’t have thought of a better way to end the show.”

Amell has portrayed all versions of Nathan since the show’s 2020 premiere. He said it was “incredibly satisfying” to see how Daniels concluded the story, adding, “That’s not to say everyone will be happy, but I think that it’s beautiful, and that it feels real. It just feels right.”

Season 4 ends with Nathan’s body failing. He refuses another upload or download, exchanges vows with Nora in a virtual wedding, and dies naturally.

Amell explained, “The show starts with Nathan being a little egotistical and selfish… and then the audience and Nathan find out at the same time that he’s maybe not as great a guy as he thought he was.” He added, “This is a guy who would have done anything to save himself in Season 1, and in Season 4, the thing that matters to him is the happiness of the person he loves.”

Nora, who could be seen wearing her ring, turns down a date after Nathan’s death. A notification alert later reveals that Nathan’s stored memories were available for download. Amell said Daniels considered “every different ending” before deciding on the one that felt most “true to the story.”

Andy Allo, who plays Nora in the show, said she would have “loved” a happy ending for her character but called the chosen conclusion a “beautiful arc,” noting, “Oh, I don’t want to upload you again and go through this. And actually, I’m OK with you dying for real.”
