Jenny Han isn’t holding back when it comes to critics of The Summer I Turned Pretty.
The showrunner, executive producer, and author behind the hit Prime Video series took to TikTok after fans slammed Season 3, Episode 9 as a so-called “filler” episode.
After the September 3 episode aired, one fan commented on TikTok, “Jenny we don’t have time for this, there’s two episodes left and you gave us NOTHING this episode.” According to a screenshot shared to Reddit, Han clapped back with a pointed response: “I gave you the last 4 years of my life. I have given all I have to give, enjoy!”
Episode 9 followed the fallout from Belly and Jeremiah’s canceled wedding. The bulk of the hour showed Jeremiah drowning his sorrows and dealing with a hangover, Belly tracking down her stolen backpack in Paris, and Steven rekindling his romance with Taylor. For those rooting for Conrad, however, the episode didn’t deliver much.
Plenty of viewers voiced their frustration online. One TikTok user complained, “jenny, we need to talk about episode 9 bc why did i watch jeremiah in bed for 40 minutes.” Another joked, “Jenny, this episode could’ve been an email.”
This isn’t the first time Han has pushed back against fan backlash. Just one week earlier, Episode 8 ended with Belly and Conrad both at the airport — Belly heading to Paris and Conrad waiting for a flight to California. Some fans immediately questioned the realism of the scene, pointing out that international and domestic flights usually leave from different terminals.
Han quickly shut that critique down, too. On Instagram, she shared a screenshot from massport.com explaining that while Boston Logan’s Terminal E is the main international terminal, “international departures may leave from any of Boston Logan’s four terminals.” She paired the proof with Dua Lipa’s “Blow Your Mind,” making it clear she wasn’t about to let the detail slide.
Despite the criticism, the fan frenzy around the show hasn’t slowed down. Team Conrad and Team Jeremiah debates remain fiery across TikTok, Reddit, and Twitter, while Belly’s journey continues to divide the audience.
