The news of 50 Cent acquiring the rights to the 2002 cult-classic film Paid in Full and developing it into a television series has sparked immediate drama, with Damon Dash making his disdain clear.
50 Cent took to Instagram to announce the deal, posting the film’s original poster and writing, “I now have the rights to PAID IN FULL, I’m developing it into a premium TV show. If you like the Godfather of Harlem, you’re gonna love this.”
He also revealed that he will be working with Cam’ron, who portrayed the unforgettable Rico, based on Harlem drug figure Alpo Martinez, in the original film. “Cam set to executive produce along side me, if you want in, get at him, I’m out the country,” Fif added.
With Cam’ron — attached as an executive producer — the project already promises intrigue. For Dame Dash, however, this move cut deep.
The Roc-A-Fella co-founder was the driving force behind Paid in Full’s release, often hailed as one of his crowning achievements as a creative and executive.
The film received widespread acclaim upon release and has since been cemented as a street classic. But Dash took issue with Cam’s new partnership with 50, firing back with a sarcastic “congratulations” on Instagram. “Cam just made a post, major announcement,” Dame said in a short video.
“I wanna congratulate him for making 50 his new boss. So, congratulations, Cam, 50’s your new boss.” He doubled down in the caption, writing: “Congratulations on making @50cent your new boss @mr_camron ? wish yall the best of luck.”
Cam’ron responded with his trademark humor, dismissing Dame’s criticism. “U really turned into a chatty patty damn,” the Diplomats founder wrote in the post’s comments section.
“Tagging me every post. Ni**a get cut out of tv series everyday B, u be ight. U only doing this for clicks, this the most action u got in ya Channel EVER. You welcome. For now on my lil ni**a. Lolol . Go to the store for me real quick.”
Adding to the tension, Dame alleged that Cam and his circle attempted to undermine him by reaching out to his son, Boogie Dash. While Dash admits Cam’ron didn’t personally contact Boogie, he insists the rapper was aware or involved.
Meanwhile, the prospect of a Paid in Full series has industry watchers buzzing. The film, which also starred Mekhi Phifer and Wood Harris, is regarded as one of the great crime dramas of its era.
50 Cent has established himself as one of television’s most bankable creators with Power and its spinoffs, and pairing his production chops with Cam’s authentic Harlem connection could prove a winning formula.
But for Dame, the move reopens old wounds, reigniting long-standing questions of ownership, loyalty, and legacy.
