Charlotte rapper DaBaby has released an emotionally charged music video for his song Save Me, portraying an alternate ending to the tragic killing of Iryna Zarutska. The 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, who fled war for safety in the United States, was fatally stabbed aboard a Charlotte light rail train on August 22. Authorities allege Decarlos Brown carried out the attack and he remains in custody facing murder charges.
In the video, DaBaby situates himself on a train nearly identical to the one where the stabbing occurred. Wearing a black hoodie, he silently watches the unfolding scene before intervening at the climactic moment. “I’m gonna put my faith in God,” the rapper says as he stops the knife, halting the violence before it claims Zarutska’s life.
An Alternate Ending Through Art
Unlike the real-life tragedy, the reenactment offers a vision of what could have been. The actor portraying Zarutska never realises the danger she narrowly escaped, instead resting a hand on her neck in a subtle gesture of relief before returning home. DaBaby’s intervention transforms the narrative from a senseless act of violence into a symbolic act of protection.
The artist directed the video himself, emphasising that it was not meant to exploit the tragedy but to honour Zarutska’s memory. “This was a prayer, a protest, and a promise never to forget,” DaBaby’s team told The Hollywood Reporter. The production draws attention not only to Zarutska’s death but to broader concerns about community safety and compassion.
Zarutska had been working at a local pizza shop in Charlotte and was described by friends as resilient and hopeful. Her killing sparked grief across the community, with murals and vigils dedicated to her memory. DaBaby’s tribute, now streaming on YouTube, serves both as remembrance and as a reclamation of dignity for the young woman who never made it home.
