Netflix‘s newest elite cooking competition series, titled “Next Gen Chef,” was filmed entirely in Dutchess County.

The first seven episodes aired on Sept. 17, but Netflix is holding the release of the season finale for a bit longer.

Timothy Ryan, Culinary Institute of America chancellor who served as executive producer and co-creator of “Next Gen Chef,” said in an email statement he expects the show to significantly boost how many people in the world know about the school and its slice of Hyde Park.

What is Netflix’s ‘Next Gen Chef’?

Netflix’s “Next Gen Chef,” an elite cooking competition series, is a “cutthroat” competition, according to Netflix.

Twenty-one young chefs will work for the title of “generational talent” and a substantial $500,000 prize.

The competitors, all under the age of 30, according to The Culinary Institute of America’s site, will endure a series of tests devised by the school.

When is the ‘Next Gen Chef’ season finale airing?

The season finale will air on Sept. 24, following the first seven episodes which aired together on Sept. 17.

Will there be a season two of ‘Next Gen Chef?

If all goes well with this first season, Ryan said, they may do a second season. There are more CIA faculty and student alumni they’d love to highlight.

Being involved in “every aspect of the series from beginning to end,” Ryan said, the experience was “wonderful.”

“I enjoyed watching our faculty, staff, students and alumni shine, and I am very proud of how the series came out,” Ryan said. “I think it will be fascinating for the viewers and a terrific global showcase for the college.”

Where was Netflix’s ‘Next Gen Chef’ filmed?

Filmed on the Hyde Park Culinary Institute of America campus through much of July 2024, “Next Gen Chef” features the entire campus.

“One of Netflix’s senior executives told me that it was one of the most organized shoots he has ever seen for a new series,” Ryan said.

From the residence halls to the library, and of course, the restaurants, kitchens and bake shops, this Dutchess County college is taking a global spotlight.

But more specifically, Ryan noted, both Boardroom and Farquharson Halls play crucial roles.

“The series does a terrific job in highlighting why the CIA has been named one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country,” Ryan said.

Who is on Netflix’s ‘Next Gen Chef’?

Besides the 21 chef competitors, model and actress Olivia Culpo, who is a former Miss Rhode Island USA, Miss USA, and Miss Universe, is hosting the show.

Two CIA alumni, Kelsey Barnard Clark, ’11, a former “Top Chef” winner, and Carlton McCoy, ’06, of “Nomad with Carlton McCoy,” are also starring as judges on the show, alongside host Culpo.

Hundreds of people came together to make it happen, such as Culinary Institute of America students, faculty, staff and the film crew. Some CIA faculty were also featured on the show.

One featured CIA faculty member, Chef Roshara Sanders, assistant professor of culinary arts, worked as a mentor and coach on “Next Gen Chef.”

Teaching at the CIA has provided her with the “leadership and mentorship skills,” she said in an email statement, to “instill confidence” in the competitors and “remind them of their strengths,” as she does for her own CIA students.

“Honestly, the entire experience was amazing. Being on Netflix is truly a dream come true,” Sanders said. “The production team, contestants, and overall process were unforgettable; I hope to have the opportunity to do it again in the future.”
