The movie world is still mourning the loss of actor and director Robert Redford, who passed away at the age of 89. The star of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” died surrounded by his loved ones, leaving behind an impressive legacy.
Redford was at his Utah home when he passed away, though no cause of death has been disclosed yet. His illustrious acting career included roles in classics like “The Sting, “All the President’s Men,” and “Out of Africa.”
In addition to his acting prowess, Redford was also a director, producer, and environmentalist. He announced his retirement from acting in 2018.
Over the years, Redford had been linked romantically with several women and had a well-publicized disagreement with Barbra Streisand.
Redford was married twice during his lifetime. His first marriage was to Lola Van Wagenen in 1958, a renowned American film and TV producer known for “The American Experience.”, reports the Mirror.
They wed at her grandmother’s home. Together, they had four children – two sons and two daughters. Tragically, their first son, Scott Anthony, passed away in 1959 at just two and a half months old due to sudden infant death syndrome.
In addition to his four children, Redford was also a grandfather to seven grandchildren.
After his divorce in 1985, Redford was linked to Sonia Braga, Lena Olin, and Kathy O’Rear over the years. In 2009, he tied the knot again, marrying longtime partner Sibylle Szaggars.
Their nuptials occurred in Hamburg.
Despite Redford’s massive film career, Szaggars confessed she had never viewed any of his movies.
In 2014, she revealed she had only managed to sit through 15 minutes of each of his pictures before they shared dinner together.
This admission reportedly captivated Redford and drew him to his second spouse.
He previously shared with People: “It was a wonderful beginning of a relationship, because it began as two human beings meeting each other and finding a connection as two human beings, rather than being coloured by success.”
The pair never had children together.
Meanwhile, although Streisand and Redford never romantically involved themselves, their conflict emerged as Redford allegedly showed hesitance about collaborating with her.
The stars appeared together in 1973’s romantic drama The Way We Were.
Director Sydney Pollack revealed Redford harbored concerns about Streisand’s supposedly “controlling” reputation.
“Barbra had never worked with a really strong leading man,” Pollack previously stated. “She has a tendency to take over a picture, just by the size of her talent and larger-than-life presence. It’s hard for a costar to stay in the same ring with her.”
Despite the early friction, the film became a massive hit and the duo remained friends for decades afterward.
