This week in TV was quickly dominated by the news of ABC’s indefinite suspension of Jimmy Kimmel. A reaction to what some considered a tasteless joke about Charlie Kirk, last night was the Jimmy Kimmel Live host’s first evening off the air. His talent was well honored though, as both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert provided their two cents on the matter.

We’ll start with The Daily Show’s segment, which saw Stewart return outside of his usually scheduled Monday hosting spot. In an extended gag that saw the comedy veteran mimicking state sponsored propaganda, Jon Stewart restrained his acidic wit, trading in (delightfully) manufactured cowardice:

Of course the entire Daily Show gang was going to get involved, in one way or another. In fact, another benefit from last night’s comedic protest was how that opener showing off just how well the rotating host roster is working out.

If you thought getting Jon Stewart back for a non-Monday show was something, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert pulled an even bigger stunt. Saluting Jimmy Kimmel’s current situation, the CBS host set to depart in May 2026 brought out a presence we haven’t seen in some time: The Colbert Report’s Stephen Colbert:

In the face of a move still being discussed by pundits and viewers alike, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert showed off returns to form that threw things back to their peak Comedy Central era. For some, it probably felt wonderful to return to those salad days of cable laughs, even if the occasion is one that’s a grave reminder of our divisive times.

While Jimmy Kimmel’s fate is pending an official ruling, one thing is for certain: we haven’t heard the last word on the subject. As Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is set to return this Sunday, fans are already anticipating what HBO’s news host will add to the conversation. If you’re looking forward to tuning in, you can watch the Emmy-award winning program’s latest at 11:10 PM ET – both through broadcast and an HBO Max subscription.
