Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK apparently went so well, he’s now planning to reciprocate by inviting King Charles to the US for a state visit. And for one royal expert it’s important the King accepts the invite as we need “to stand together.”

The White House has confirmed a US state visit is in the works with an invitation to go out, which made us want to check in with Brittani Barger, co-founder of Royal News, as to whether or not she thinks this will happen.

Barger believes Trump will follow through, and that waiting until next year makes sense as it’s the 250th anniversary of US independence, which would make Charles’ visit all the more poignant.

Barger said: “The President loves the Royal Family, and I’m sure he will be happy to have them at the White House.”

She added: “I would think the King would accept it as it is a great way to keep the special relationship between the US and UK. In times such as these, it’s important that we stand together.”

There is no record of a British monarch declining a state visit to the US, but with that said, it does depend on Charles’ health, which comes first.

If for some reason the British monarch is not able to make the visit, it’s being said Prince William and Princess Kate would go in his place, which would make it an official visit versus a state visit, which is reserved for the head of state.

Barger shared her thoughts on the matter: “I think the only way Charles would decline the invite is for health reasons.”

She added: “The visit might be altered so that the Prince and Princess of Wales could come in his place, of course, if the Princess’s health allows. In that case, it would just be an official visit and not a state visit.”

There is no record of a British monarch declining an invite to the US for a state visit

The last state visit by a monarch was Queen Elizabeth II in 2007. The late Queen made four state visits during her reign, meeting with President Dwight D. Eisenhower, President Gerald Ford, President George H.W. Bush and President George W. Bush.

Since former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama both made state visits to the UK, it was deemed unnecessary to reciprocate, and it goes the same for Trump during his first term.

When speaking to Barger, the royal expert addressed the US hosting state visits.

She said: “It’s been a while since the US hosted a foreign monarch on a state visit.

She added: “I believe the last state visit by a monarch was Queen Elizabeth II’s 2007 state visit while President George W. Bush was in office.”

With next year marking the 250th Anniversary of the US gaining its independence from the UK, it may make for some interesting conversation, in which Barger elaborated on.

Barger said: “Next year will mark 250 years since the US became a country, and obviously, we gained our freedom from Britain.

She explained: “I think hosting Charles (the 5 times great grandson of King George III who lost the colonies) in the 250 anniversary year is a great way to mark the occasion and continue the long-standing ties between the two countries.”

What would really make interesting dinner conversation would be to throw Prince Harry and Meghan Markle into the mix by inviting them to the state banquet, in which Barger brought up, and we second that idea.

With Harry and Meghan based in the US, it would make sense, but there has been some tension between the US President and the Sussexes, which Barger touches upon.

Barger shared her thoughts on the matter, saying: “I think it will be interesting to see if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would be invited to D.C. for the state banquet or another event.”

She added: “Harry seems to want to repair the relationship with his father, and for his part, Charles seems to want to repair the relationship with his son.”

“However, considering Meghan is a vocal Democrat, I’m not so sure the Trump White House would want her and Harry on the list. Trump has made his opinions on the Sussexes very clear.”
