If you’ve ever ventured into the central part of the state, you may have spotted this Texas-based grocery chain that stands out with its recognizable red and white logo.
Based in San Antonio, H-E-B operates more than 440 stores, including in Mexico, making it one of the biggest independent food retailers in the nation, according to its website. The chain also reports over $46 billion in annual sales.
While there are dozens of locations near and in San Antonio, Austin and Houston, and continued expansion into the northern part of the state, El Paso has yet to get its own H-E-B. The El Paso Times reached out to media relations at the grocery chain to see if there are any plans in the works to expand to the Borderland, but has not heard back as of yet.
Why is H-E-B so popular?
H-E-B recently ranked as the No. 1 grocery store in the U.S., surpassing Amazon, Costco, Target, and Trader Joe’s, according to a January 2025 report by CBS News, which cited a study by a customer data science firm.
The study evaluated convenience, quality and price, and rewarded H-E-B the top spot because of “its superior ability to deliver a combination of better savings and better experience and assortment, supported by time savings through better digital capabilities.”
What does H-E-B stand for?
HEB is an abbreviation for Howard E. Butt, the son of the store’s founder, Florence Butt.
With a $60 investment, Florence Butt opened the first H-E-B in Kerrville in 1905, and then Howard took over the business in the 1920s.
What’s the nearest H-E-B to El Paso?
The nearest H-E-B to El Paso is in Lubbock, about 338 miles away. That translates to about a 5-hour and 28-minute drive and you’ll have to travel through New Mexico to reach it the quickest. You can also go through Pecos and Odessa —but that will add another half hour to your commute.
The location in Lubbock opened in 2020 and is over 122,000 square feet, featuring a barbecue dine-in area plus drive-thru, H-E-B Pharmacy, curbside service, an outdoors department, floral department, bakery, and more, reported local radio station KFYO.
