On Saturday morning, Oct. 4, the next free movie event for the Watertown community occurs at Odyssey Grand 8 Theatre.
This free community event will showcase “Hotel Transylvania,” with sponsorship from Dakotaland Federal Credit Union of Watertown for every outing. These movie events have existed for decades and occur throughout the entire year.
The free movie does not require a ticket to be issued, as seating is first come, first served, but organizers like Gary Westmark, Vice President of Operations for Odyssey Cinemas, say “There should be plenty of room for all, as they are played in multiple auditoriums.”

Small pumpkins are for sale at the annual E.Z. Orchards HarvestFest on Saturday, Sept. 27. 2025, in Salem, Ore.
Doors and concessions open at 9:30 a.m., with the movie starting at 10 a.m.
“Moviegoing has always been about shared experiences,” Westmark told the Aberdeen News. “By hosting free family screenings, we are helping remove barriers for parents and kids to enjoy the magic of the big screen together. Thanks to Dakotaland FCU’s sponsorship, these monthly events give back to the community. The program reflects Odyssey Cinemas’ belief that movie theaters are more than just places to watch films—they are community gathering spaces.”
Located at 1201 5th St. SE on Watertown’s south side, Odyssey Grand 8 Theatre hosts a different movie the first Saturday every month at 10 a.m.
Taylor Ulm is the local general manager of the theater in Watertown.
A brief synopsis of Hotel Transylvania from the Watertown Area Chamber of Commerce reads:
“When monsters want to get away from it all, they go to Count Dracula’s Hotel Transylvania, a lavish resort where they can be themselves without humans around to bother them. On one special weekend, Dracula invites creatures like the Invisible Man, the Mummy and others to celebrate the 118th birthday of his daughter, Mavis. However, an unforeseen complication unfolds when an ordinary human unwittingly crashes the party and falls in love with Mavis.”
Odyssey Cinemas are headquartered in Sioux Falls with locations throughout South Dakota.
