Morgan Wallen brings his one of his most personal songs, “I Got Better,” to life with a cinematic music video that vividly shows the pain after heartbreak and the journey toward healing.
Directed by longtime collaborator Justin Clough, the “I Got Better” video uses a car accident to represent the emotional wreckage caused by a broken relationship. The clip opens with Wallen and a woman, representing his love interest, climbing out of an overturned, burning truck in the pouring rain. The two escape the wreckage and go their separate ways.
As Wallen walks down the road, away from the flames, his bloodied wounds gradually begin to heal and the rips in his clothes slowly mend. By the end of the video, Morgan Wallen is seen getting into a new truck and lighting a cigarette, perhaps signaling a new beginning that will come to life in his next music video. While not confirmed, Wallen did recently reveal that he filmed a music video for his song “20 Cigarettes,” and that could just be a continuation of the story told in the “I Got Better” music video.
Wallen first teased the “I Got Better” music video on Instagram on September 3, sharing a photo of himself in bloodied clothing while riding a bike during a break from his I’m The Problem Tour. He captioned the post, “Interesting bye week lol.”
Co-written by Wallen alongside Blake Pendergrass, Michael Hardy (HARDY), Ernest Keith Smith (ERNEST), Charlie Handsome and Chase McGill, “I Got Better” appears on his latest project, I’m The Problem, which features 37 tracks. The song tells the story of personal growth experienced within the aftermath of a heartbreak.
“It is one of my most personal songs on the entire record,” Wallen admitted of the track during an interview with Billboard. “And it’s a song that a lot of fans are relating to.” The East Tennessee native also stated that the song can be interpreted in many ways, and that there isn’t necessarily one storyline to the track. “The girl could be anything to me,” Wallen added. “It wasn’t necessarily a relationship with another human. It could have been a relationship with anything in your life that was holding you back, and the only thing that you did was eliminate that, and everything became clearer in your life.”
According to Wallen, the songwriting process involved some creative tension. “We went through all kinds of different ways to write it, and in my mind, the song needed to be a certain way, and everyone else kind of had a different idea about it,” he continued. “I was adamant that I wanted it to be where the guy literally didn’t change anything in his life other than the girl was gone.”
During the discussion with the outlet, Wallen also reflected on how deep the song really is and how music can bring out hidden emotions. “There is something beautiful about music in that you don’t always have to go to exact feelings or scenarios,” Wallen said. “A good song has a way of bringing out those feelings in you that may not be at the forefront. There is anger, there is sadness, there is disdain, there’s a lot of things in that song that make you just feel. Of course, I have some of those experiences in my life that I could [draw from], but something about a good song just harkens that within you, and it makes it easier to bring out.”
The track came together during a “breakfast songwriting session” at Wallen’s Tennessee farmhouse at the end of 2024.
I’m The Problem also includes “Smile,” “Lies Lies Lies,” “Love Somebody,” “Just In Case,” “I’m A Little Crazy,” “Superman,” “Interlude,” “20 Cigarettes,” “TN,” “Don’t We,” “Falling Apart,” “Kick Myself,” “Genesis,” “Kiss Her In Front Of You” and more as well as collaborations with his musical hero Eric Church, along with Post Malone, Tate McRae, and longtime friends and collaborators HARDY and ERNEST.
The project, which served as his fourth studio album, arrived on May 16, 2025, and spent 12 non-consecutive weeks atop both the Billboard 200 albums chart and Billboard Canadian Albums chart. I’m The Problem debuted at No. 1 in seven countries. In the United States, Wallen broke his own record for most simultaneous entries in Billboard Hot 100 history, with 37 songs charting at once upon its release. The project also became Wallen’s first album to debut at No. 1 on the UK Official Charts, making him one of only five artists to top the chart with a country record.
Wallen recently wrapped up his 20-date I’m The Problem stadium tour with two sold-out shows at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Canada, on September 12 and 13. According to The City Of Edmonton, Wallen closed out his tour by performing for 114,636 fans across the two nights.
