Dr. Jane Goodall, the groundbreaking primatologist renowned for her scientific research on chimpanzees in the wild, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 91. The anthropologist was in California while on a speaking tour.
Many world leaders and politicians, including Justin Trudeau, Barack Obama, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have paid tribute to her legacy.
A lifelong animal activist and conservationist, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Joe Biden in January 2025, just months before she passed. On multiple occasions, she compared Donald Trump to a male chimpanzee while expressing fears over America’s ” divisiveness.”
The English researcher was considered the foremost expert on chimpanzees in the world, having studied the primates for over six decades.
Dr. Goodall made significant discoveries in the early 1960s about how chimpanzees in the wild communicate and socialize with each other, establish leadership among themselves, and raise their young, all of which had never been documented before her extensive research.
Jane also spoke with The Atlantic before the businessman-turned-reality-TV-star won the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, making connections between Trump and chimpanzees based on her knowledge of their behavior.
“In many ways, the performances of Donald Trump remind me of male chimpanzees and their dominance rituals,” she explained.
“In order to impress rivals, males seeking to rise in the dominance hierarchy perform spectacular displays: stamping, slapping the ground, dragging branches, throwing rocks. The more vigorous and imaginative the display, the faster the individual is likely to rise in the hierarchy, and the longer he is likely to maintain that position.”
Jane is not the first person to criticize Trump for his brutish primate-like behavior and crass communication style, but she might be the first to have the expertise to back up her Monkey-Man claims.
