If you’re not familiar with The Protomen but clicked on this story anyway, then you’re in for a treat. The band, formed as part of a college project at MTSU, released their self-titled debut album in 2005. Their second album, The Protomen Act II – The Father of Death, released in 2009. After that, they released a live album, a cover album, and a few other odds and ends, but Act III quickly became vaporware, much like Mega Man Legends 3.
No, I didn’t just mention Mega Man Legends 3 for no reason. If their band name didn’t give it away, The Protomen’s work is inspired by the legendary Capcom video game series, Mega Man. While they interpret it a 1980s-inspired cyberpunk saga about a populace drowning in cynicism and scientists who choose to build heroes instead of becoming them, the influence is still clear.
Capcom
Now, after sixteen years of waiting (and a couple of singles over the years), Act III – This City Made Us is finally upon us. Almost. The first two songs of the album can be streamed at The Protomen’s Bandcamp, with new songs releasing weekly until the album comes out in January of 2026.
Mega Man fans are used to waiting. The gap between Mega Man 10 and 2018’s Mega Man 11 was eight years, and there’s no Mega Man 12 on the horizon. Meanwhile, fans of Mega Man Legends (the best version of Mega Man, fight me) have been waiting for a resolution to the cliffhanger ending of Mega Man Legends 2 since 2000. It’s been 25 years, and I still believe we’ll see that story continue within my lifetime. It’s just a matter of time.
Until then, we can spend the rest of the year celebrating the Mega Man mythos with The Protomen Act III’s staggered release strategy. After that’s done, who knows, maybe Capcom will get The Protomen to provide the soundtrack for Mega Man Legends 3! Wouldn’t that be cool? All I know is, I have forbidden Capcom from making any “Bad Box Art Mega Man” jokes until we get Mega Man Legends 3. I’m a sensitive flower and I take that stuff personally.
