Roger Moore, known for his smooth and charming demeanor both on and off-screen, was also renowned for his sharp wit and knack for storytelling. He demonstrated this during a talk at London‘s Southbank Centre, where he regaled the audience with shocking tales from his career just months before his passing.
His co-stars, ranging from Britt Ekland to Jane Seymour, have all spoken highly of his kindness and good manners over the years. However, there was one star whose behavior pushed the Bond icon to his limit.
The Man With The Golden Gun, released on December 19, 1974, is a classic Ian Fleming spy film featuring Maud Adams and Britt Ekland, along with Hervé Villechaize, who portrayed the villainous Nick Nack, henchman to Christopher Lee’s Scaramanga.
During his talk at the Southbank Centre, Moore shared his disgust over the sexual antics of Villechaize, who stood at 3ft 11ins tall.
Moore recounted: “He was a very small man and he used to touch me and I used to say, ‘Don’t touch me. You are diseased. I wasn’t being cruel about his size, it was just that he was a sex maniac. He had a lust for ladies, unnatural,” reports the Express.
Moore went on to say: “When we were in Hong Kong he would find girls in girly clubs and go with a flashlight, ‘You, you, not you.'”.
In a shocking reflection of the past era of promiscuity and sexism, Moore revealed that he once asked Villechaize how many women he had slept with during the film shoot in the Far East.
“He (Villechaize) told me 35. I told him that did not count as he paid for them, but he said, ‘Sometimes when I pay they refuse.'”.
Unfortunately, Villechaize’s life was not filled with amusing stories like Moore’s. He fought his way to fame, but after nearly two decades in the spotlight, his life took a sudden and tragic turn.
After The Man With The Golden Gun, he found renewed success when he starred alongside Ricardo Montalban as Mr Roarke’s assistant, Tattoo, in the television series Fantasy Island from 1978.
He was let go in 1984 after repeated conflicts with the show’s producers over his salary demands and inappropriate advances towards female cast members and crew.
Villechaize’s life ended tragically when he shot himself in the garden of his Hollywood home in 1993, at the age of 50.
He left behind a suicide note that read, “I love everybody. Nobody is to blame for this.”
His girlfriend Kathy Self disclosed that he had been dealing with chronic pain due to the strain his normal-sized organs were putting on his small body.
