After 20 years, Arizona band The Format has come back for a reunion tour, performing on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Monday, Oct. 6.
Taylor Swift will also be on The Tonight Show on Oct. 6 to discuss the drop of her new album “The Life of a Showgirl”.
If you weren’t here for The Format’s rise to stardom in the early 2000s, now is your chance to join the fandom. The band has not released new music since 2007, yet it has reunited after 20 years for a mini reunion tour, along with the performance on Fallon’s show.
The band tried to perform this tour back in 2020 but was halted by the pandemic. Fans are hopeful the tour promises new music from the duo and a chance to reignite the band.
Who is The Format?
The Format consist of lead singer Nate Ruess and instrumentalist Sam Means. The band is known for their indie, pop-punk style that’s very reminiscent of the early 2000s.
Both members are from Phoenix, and even met in high school at 16-years-old. Means told KJZZ in a 2023 interview that he and Ruess were very serious about music from the get-go, even signing to a label early in their career, though they would soon drop it later.
After their release of the track “Dog Problems” in 2006 the band grew a fandom fast, especially in Phoenix. The Format continued to play shows and make music until 2008 when they eventually broke up.

Why did The Format break up?
The Format broke up in 2008 due to artistic differences. Means felt that things weren’t the same as they used to be, and Ruess started feeling frustrated with song writing, admitting several times in interviews that he can sometimes be difficult to work with. However, both members went on to have successful careers after the break up.
Means, still living in Phoenix, started the merchandizing company Hello Merch in 2008. Operating right out of Phoenix, the company is a merchandise distributer for major artists such as Mac Demarco, Japanese Breakfast, TV GIRL and many more.
Means also released a solo album in 2016 called “10 Songs” as well as a soundtrack to the movie “The Sinking of Santa Isabel” as well as a few other projects.
After the break-up of The Format, Ruess joined the band fun. with Jack Antonoff and Andrew Dost. Antonoff is now part of the band The Bleachers, but is better know for producing some of today’s greatest pop hits. Antonoff has worked on all of Taylors Swift’s album since “1989,” except her newest album “Life of a Showgirl”.
Ruess was in the band fun. with Antonoff from 2008 to 2015, when the band decided to split to work on personal projects. Ruess then released a solo album in 2015 and has sporadically been featured on songs with artists like Pink and Kesha.
Is The Format getting back together?
Yes, The Format has rejoined for a small tour, stopping in Arizona, New York and California. However, there has been no official statement as to whether or not the duo will continue to make music together after this tour.
News songs such as “Shot In The Dark” and “Holy Roller” have been performed on the tour. This has made fans hopeful that the band could pick up where it left off, but nothing has been confirmed.
