Fanfare, Southeastern Louisiana University’s annual fall festival of the arts, humanities and social sciences, will present a movie screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Back by popular demand, the event is scheduled at Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts in downtown Hammond, Oct. 18, at 9 p.m. Tickets are available at the Columbia Theatre box office.
HAMMOND — Events surrounding music, theatre, and a movie screening are scheduled during the upcoming week of the 40th season of Fanfare, Southeastern Louisiana University’s annual fall festival of the arts, humanities and social sciences.
On Oct. 15, at 12:30 p.m., the History and Political Science Department will present the next Fanfare lecture in the series. Scheduled in the Student Union Theatre, the lecture, titled “The Evil God and the New Testament: How Marcion Shaped Early Christian Scripture,” will be given by Adam Meier of Northshore Technical Community College.
A Southeastern alumnus, Meier will discuss Marcion of Sinope, a second century Christian theologian with the radical belief that the God of the Hebrew scriptures was a wrathful deity binding humanity to a harsh law, while Jesus was the vehicle by which a separate loving God offered salvation. Marcion was the first to develop an authoritative list of scripture for the early Church and served as a catalyst for Orthodox Christians to take seriously what is canon.
Also on Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. is a free concert by the Southeastern Jazz Ensemble. Titled “Classics with a Twist,” the concert will be held in Pottle Music Building Recital Hall. Audience members will enjoy an evening of jazz with a full big band, featuring classics by Duke Ellington and Sammy Nestico, as well as twists on some classic favorites.
Scheduled Oct. 16, at 8:30 p.m., is a concert by the Southeastern Gospel Choir. Titled “Late Night Shift Homecoming Concert,” the performance will be held in Pottle Auditorium and is free and open to the public. Audience members will enjoy a night of fellowship and music and experience the sounds of worship and celebration featuring voices united in faith and joy.
A special theatre presentation titled “The Graveyard Girls” is scheduled Oct. 17 – 19 with start times of 7 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Held at the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts in downtown Hammond, the production features an original score composed by Voice of the Enemy’s Hayden Kimball, is written by Columbia Theatre’s Resident Playwright Tommy Jamerson, and is directed by Columbia Theatre’s Artistic Director Jim Winter.
“Four teenagers spend Halloween night telling spooky stories in a secluded cemetery. What could possibly go wrong,” asked Winter. “This world premiere production will be presented in our Studio Theatre, perfect for an intimate evening of thrills and chills.”
Tickets for the production are $25 for adults and $15 for students, and are available at the Columbia Theatre box office.
