Iconic rock wife Pattie Boyd, known for her marriage to Beatles guitarist George Harrison and later Eric Clapton, spoke out about the actress who will be playing her in the upcoming set of biopics about the British band, The White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood.
“Big news, indeed! I’m looking forward (hoping) to meet Aimee Lou at some point in the future,” the 81-year-old It girl wrote via Twitter in response to the news of Wood’s casting.
Wood, 31, is one of four women cast as significant girlfriends and wives of Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr. Wood’s casting is pretty on the nose great, but so are the other choices. Saoirse Ronan will play McCartney’s wife Linda McCartney, Shogun star Anna Sawai will play Yoko Ono, and How To Have Sex breakout star Mia McKenna-Bruce will play Starr’s wife Maureen Starkey.
As for the Beatles themselves, it was previously announced that Harris Dickinson would play Lennon, Barry Keoghan would play Starr, Joseph Quinn would play Harrison, and Paul Mescal would play McCartney. But so far, those are all the casting announcements that have been made for director Sam Mendes’ set of four films. There’s bound to be a lot more coming, as Beatles mainstays like late manager Brian Epstein, road manager Mal Evans, and assistant Neil Aspinall will most likely make appearances in the film.
When it comes to what the films will cover, we don’t have much information there just yet. It’s said that each film will have a focus on one particular Beatle, but as far as exactly what major events will be featured in the films, it’s anyone’s guess. That said, it is confirmed that celebrated playwright Jez Butterworth, Conclave writer Peter Straughan, and Adolescence writer Jack Thorne will pen the scripts.
Similarly, we don’t know just yet which songs will be used in the movie, but the films do have the approval of the Beatles’ music label Apple Corps, which maintains the rights to their catalog, for both the full life story rights and music rights. This is fairly different from many smaller music biopics, particularly the 2009 Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy, which opted not to use the band’s tracks because of the expense. Mendes’ films have access to the full catalog, but it remains to be seen which songs they use.
Lennon and Harrison are unfortunately no longer alive to see how they would be portrayed on screen, but McCartney, 83, and Starr, 85, are still here — and Starr took it upon himself to speak for the group about how they feel about the movies.
“We all support the Sam Mendes movie project. Yes, indeed,” he previously wrote on social media when the movies were first announced. Later, he opened up specifically about Keoghan, 32, playing him and what he thought of the popular actor’s casting. “I think he’s great, I believe he’s somewhere taking drum lessons,” Starr told Entertainment Tonight. “I hope not too many.” McCartney has not commented publicly about the biopics, but Lennon and Harrison’s estates are in favor of the projects.
All four films will be released theatrically in April 2028, and Mendes previously called it “the first bingeable theatrical experience.”
