Celebrities including Robert De Niro and Bette Midler have paid tribute to Hollywood star Diane Keaton after she died aged 79.

The actress, known for her roles in major films including The Godfather, Annie Hall and Father of the Bride, died in California this weekend.

One of her last public appearances was in December 2024 when she was seen doing some holiday shopping in Brentwood, California.

News of her death was confirmed on Saturday by her spokesperson. No further details are available at this time and her family has asked for privacy while they mourn the loss of the beloved actress.

Diane was loved by fans and fellow actors, many of whom paid tribute to her on Saturday.

“She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was … oh, la, lala!”

Father of the Bride co-star Steve Martin, who played Diane’s husband, shared a photo of the actress on X and wrote, “Loved!” He also posted an interview exchange on Instagram in which Martin Short asked her who she thought was sexier between him and Steve and she replied, “I mean, you’re both idiots.”

Steve captioned the post, “Don’t know who first posted this, but it sums up our delightful relationship with Diane.”

Leonardo DiCaprio, who played Diane’s nephew in Marvin’s Room when he was 18, wrote on Instagram that she was “one of a kind. Brilliant, funny and unapologetically herself…she will be deeply missed.”

In a post on Instagram, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who starred as Keaton’s daughter in the Father of the Bride movies, shared photos of the pair sharing the screen and wrote, “Diane, working with you will always be one of the highlights of my life.

“You are one of a kind, and it was thrilling to be in your orbit for a time. Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, your talent, and above all, your laughter.”

Mary Steenburgen, who starred in Book Club and Book Club: The Next Chapter with the actress, said in a statement shared with Deadline, “Diane was magic. There was no one, nor will there ever be, anyone like her. I loved her and felt blessed to be her friend. My love to her family. What a wonder she was!!!”

Their co-star Jane Fonda wrote on Instagram, “It’s hard to believe…or accept…that Diane has passed. She was always a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative…in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her world view. Unique is what she was. And, though she didn’t know it or wouldn’t admit it, man she was a fine actress!”

Among the stars who paid tribute to Diane was Goldie Hawn, who also starred in The First Wives Club. She posted on Instagram, “Diane, we aren’t ready to lose you. You’ve left us with a trail of fairy dust, filled with particles of light and memories beyond imagination.

“How do we say goodbye? What words can come to mind when your heart is broken? You never liked praise, so humble, but now you can’t tell me to ‘shut up’ honey. There was, and will be, no one like you.”

Cynthia Nixon, who worked with the Hollywood star on the film Five Flights Up, which she described as a “dream come true,” said, “When I was a kid, Diane Keaton was my absolute idol. I loved her acting. I loved her vibe. I loved her everything.”

Night at the Museum star Ben Stiller described Diane as “one of the greatest film actors ever. An icon of style, humor and comedy. Brilliant. What a person.”

Sarah Jessica Parker said in a statement to People, “Diane Keaton has been a point of inspiration for countless actresses. I include myself among those who loved and admired her.”

“I was very privileged to witness her singular skill and talent on both First Wives Club and The Family Stone. I will cherish those memories on set as well her touching, delightful and perfectly own cinematic career. Which is a gorgeous legacy of an exquisite person,” she continued, adding, “She will be terribly missed.”
