Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Marvel Television Series Sees Him Auditioning For The Role Of A Lifetime

The first trailer for Marvel Television’s upcoming series Wonder Man, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, shows Mateen in a meta role as an actor trying out for the biggest role of his career–a superhero.

The fast-paced trailer for the eight-part series doesn’t focus on superpowers at all–instead, it focuses squarely on the process of casting and the business of Hollywood. However, comic book fans know that Simon Williams, aka Wonder Man, becomes a superhero through ionic energy.

From what the trailer shows, it seems that some parts of Simon’s comic book lore will be left behind, such as Simon being from a rich family whose business, Williams Innovations, dealt in creating weapons. Simon also had an abusive family, and while we don’t know what kind of family Mateen’s version of Simon comes from, it feels like much of the focus of the series will be on Simon as an actor trying to make in the tough world of Hollywood.

The trailer made its debut at New York Comic Con’s Empire Stage, with Head of Marvel Television and Marvel Animation Brad Winderbaum introducing Marvel Television and Marvel Animation’s upcoming 2026 slate. Winderbaum talked with Mateen and Sir Ben Kingsley about the series before introducing the trailer.

Other Marvel Television updates

Apart from Wonder Man, other projects coming up next year include the second season of Daredevil: Born Again and the third and final series in the WandaVision trilogy, VisionQuest.

Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again stars Charlie Cox as the title character. Krysten Ritter also joined Cox on the New York Comic Con stage to reveal she’s reprising her character, Jessica Jones, six years after the end of the eponymous Netflix series. The two also confirmed Season 3 is already greenlit and in the works.

VisionQuest brings Paul Bettany back as Vision, who is going on a journey of self-discovery with Ultron, to be reprised by James Spader. Bettany talked about the series at the convention along with sharing a special look at the series, coming to Disney+ in 2026.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and X-Men ’97 are also coming back for second seasons in 2026. The animated Spider-Man series will be back on the streamer next fall, while X-Men ’97 will debut that summer. Winderbaum talked with original X-Men: The Animated Series writers Eric and Julia Lewald, as well as original series director Larry Houston. All three have joined the second season as executive producers and shared some of their process with the fans, along with a sneak peek.
