The Conjuring: Last Rites concluded its terrifying saga by bringing back many familiar faces — but some fan-favorites were left out.
Director Michael Chaves is now explaining why more franchise cast members didn’t return for that emotional climax.
As paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) watched their daughter Judy (Mia Tomlinson) marry Tony Spera (Ben Hardy), members of the haunted families they rescued in past installments popped up among the attendees.
Lili Taylor and Mackenzie Foy, from the 2013 original The Conjuring’s Perron family, showed up, and O.G. director-producer James Wan also appeared onscreen.
But other recognizable Perron family members, like two portrayed by Joey King and Ron Livingston, and more were absent.

Director Chaves told The Hollywood Reporter scheduling conflicts prevented a larger franchise reunion from happening.
“We were totally talking to them, but they were also shooting something else at the time. If we were all in the same city then it would’ve been possible for them to just duck over, but we were shooting in England,” he explained.
“Honestly, we were trying to get everybody who has ever been in a Conjuring movie into that wedding scene, but we just couldn’t,” said Chaves. “It’s really hard to schedule something like that.”

The Nun’s Taissa Farmiga (Vera’s real-life sister) also didn’t return. “I did text Taissa to say, ‘You should show up at the wedding, just as a little glimpse, a cameo. We won’t worry about the age gap or anything.’ But she was shooting something, and we couldn’t do that.”
The director also told /Film about pulling off the cameo-filled wedding sequence, calling it a “massive, massive feat of coordination.”
“Because we’re shooting in England also and so it’s, like, flying people over just for one day, really what ended up being one afternoon to shoot that,” he told the outlet. “It was a big feat. And I’m so glad that I didn’t have to keep track of everybody that was gonna be there.”
He added, “It was really cool. It was also a family reunion that I feel like I married into where I was like, I don’t know everybody but I definitely still have an emotional connection to it all. It was great.”
The Conjuring: Last Rites is now available on digital.
