It confuses adults, creates havoc in the classroom, and spurs uproarious laughter amongst middle schoolers.
Yes, it is the viral 6-7 social media trend.
Began on TikTok — or the third circle of hell ala Dante’s Inferno (who knows?) — the meme has spilled out from the Interwebs and become a part of everyone’s real life—that is, if you live with, care for, or work around kids between the ages of 11 and 14.
High schoolers seem largely spared from this latest social media phenomenon, which appears to involve kids screaming, chanting, or saying “6-7” at inconvenient times.
This, of course, is annoying teachers who already have to deal with so much, leading some school districts to ban the practice, as reported by Axios. How will that work?
While it can be disruptive, the consensus is that the trend is largely harmless. Unlike the TikTok challenge earlier this spring, which saw students across the country destroying their school-issued Chromebooks.
So if you are an adult, be thankful the kiddos are not tossing back Tide Pods, and we have our social media trends, too, like “girl dinner” and eating mustard and cottage cheese.
What does Six Seven mean?
Honestly? It doesn’t really have a meaning, which is a meaning in and of itself. It might be referring to the videos, so it’s a wink among kids who have seen it.
What is the origin of the Six Seven meme?
Seems like it comes from a Skrilla song called Doot Doot (6 7) that mentions the two numbers a lot (maybe referring to Chicago’s 67th Street). But, NBA Charlotte Hornets Guard LaMelo Ball said 6-7 once in reference to his height, as well. The mystery continues.
‘South Park’ goes all-in
The 6-7 viral meme was forever memorialized in pop culture when referenced in a “South Park” episode earlier in October. For future students and researchers, there is a Wikipedia page.
Why has the 6-7 meme lasted this long?
Not every social media trend has reached “South Park” status. Career marketers and YouTube experts agree that to make a trend go viral and stick, a meme is usually visually appealing, invites the audience to participate, engage, or co-create content, and is relatable and humorous, especially if you are in middle school.
