Stephen King was accused of being “duped” after he publicly criticized Donald Trump for something that didn’t happen.

The 78-year-old author, dubbed the King of Horror, claimed that the president said he wouldn’t invite the Toronto Blue Jays to the White House after the team won their first American League East Division title since 2015.

“Trump says he won’t invite either team playing in the World Series to the White House,” Stephen wrote on X.

“He can’t rise above his petty political concerns even for the great American game. If anything shows what a louse he is, that’s it.”

However, as noted by fact-checkers, Trump didn’t actually make this statement – as this claim was based on a fabricated screenshot that was not written by the president.

The post, written in all-capital letters, which is Trump’s style of posting online, and widely shared online, said the US would be investigating the “un-American” team as they attempted to “steal” the World Series, adding they would not be invited to the White House.

“WE WILL BE INVESTIGATING THE UN AMERICAN BLUE JAYS WHO ARE ATTEMPTING TO STEAL OUR BELOVED WORLD SERIES,” read the screenshot, which looked like a post by Trump on his Truth Social account.

“THEY WILL DEFINITELY NOT BE INVITED TO THE WHITE HOUSE.”

However, the White House confirmed to The Canadian Press that Trump had not written the post – and it didn’t appear on his social media accounts.

Several people criticized Stephen for sharing the claims on his X profile, as a note pointed out, “The claim stems from a fabricated screenshot.

“Fact-checks and the White House confirm no such Trump post exists; the image came from a satire account and never appeared on his platforms.”

A critic said, “You have been duped, yet again, Stephen. When will you learn to look before you leap?”

A person tweeted, “Trump didn’t make that statement, did he?” Another account said, “I know you’re an author of fiction, Mr. King, but we don’t need it here.”

Someone else posted, “Steve…. Bro….. how about just trying to be a good person on here man… you continue to repost or comment about things that are lies. And obvious at that.”

One more wrote, “Yet that’s not true Stephen. He never said that. It comes from a satire account that made it up. I thought you’d get better at checking resources after the last time you had to apologize.”

“Actually, that wasn’t a post from Trump,” someone else said. “Yes I know it sounds like something he’d say but he didn’t.”

A person added, “You would think a best-selling author would take the time to check his sources before publishing.”

As a vocal Trump critic, Stephen backed this month’s No Kings rallies, saying those attending the protests are “trying to save the country from a despot.”
