After countless online debates and discussions about Liam Hemsworth assuming the mantle of Geralt of Rivia and trying to swoosh his sword into the monster’s head just as Henry Cavill did, we finally have the answer we’ve been waiting for: Has Liam matched up to what Cavill perfected over three years?
The answer, in short: yes and no!
Despite the negativity surrounding Hemsworth and the show following the new cast announcement, many are now convinced that The Witcher is still going strong even after Cavill’s abrupt departure. The Wrap praised Hemsworth, saying, “Though it was always a tall order for Hemsworth to step into Cavill’s big shoes as the lead of an established ensemble beloved by the show’s audience, the new Geralt never rises to the occasion.”
Variety also views Liam’s transition into Geralt positively, “Although the voice isn’t quite the same, as the episodes move forward and given the season’s straightforward structure, which zeros in on Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri separately, the transition is mostly seamless.”
IGN concurs, “…there are a handful of things to consider here when I say that Liam Hemsworth is fine, but also, yes, you need some time to get used to him as Geralt. That happens with any big casting change, like going from Andy Whitfield to Liam McIntyre on Spartacus…”
However, not everyone is singing praises for Liam. Some critics have taken their time to rip apart Hemsworth’s performance as hopeless. The Guardian noted, “Geralt II is less ‘valorous man-mountain grappling with responsibilities beyond our ken’ and more ‘bollard in a wig.’” Radio Times also seems unimpressed, “Hemsworth does his best with the material he’s been given, but his delivery and performance often falls flat – which may just prove the final straw for many long-time viewers.”
The Witcher Season 4 currently sits at a 53% Rotten Tomato score, down from 79% for Season 3. Nonetheless, Hemsworth still has one season to win fans over and prove he still has that Geralt-ness left in him.
