The first sign that Decatur’s newest entertainment spot is different is the somewhat mysterious procedures to gain entrance.
A suspendered greeter guards the entrance of RoSo Treasury on W. Ponce de Leon Avenue and is pleasant but not forthright about exactly how one gains admittance. After a bit of friendly banter, he shares that the establishment—a bank—is closed but under certain conditions one can enter. (Not wanting to reveal too much, I’ll leave it at that…except to add the password is “I want to visit my safe deposit box.”)
Eventually one ventures down a flight of stairs and along a long hallway which leads to a vault door that opens if one remembers the instructions given upstairs. Through that door, one steps into Roaring Social Decatur, a speakeasy themed bar, restaurant, and music venue.
The intriguing venue made a delightful impression on me when I stopped in on a Tuesday jazz night.
Subdued lighting, a velvet-draped lounge, a horseshoe-shaped bar and intimate table seating in an expansive space with servers decked out in 1920ish black and white attire add to the step-back-in-time atmosphere. There’s also four lanes of duck pin (smaller balls, shorter lanes) bowling tucked around a corner from the bar.
Roaring Social Decatur’s theme is reminiscent of the speakeasies that sprang up from 1920-1933 during the prohibition era when alcohol sales were banned. These illegal establishments, often hidden behind unmarked doors, required special knocks or passwords for entry.
Roaring Social Decatur, which opened Sept. 18 at the corner of Clairemont and W. Ponce de Leon, features a restaurant and range of craft cocktails.
A full roster and wide range of entertainment (rock, blues, jazz, Latin, big band, etc.) is scheduled nearly every night of the week, except for when the bar is closed Sundays and Mondays. Dueling piano and karaoke with live bands are also scheduled. There is no cover charge before 7 p.m. most nights and $10 to $20 cover charge some nights. Here are a few upcoming events:
- Nov. 11 Joe Gransden’s Big Band, cover charge
- Nov. 12 The C.O.T. Band, Latin night
- Nov. 22 Grey Sunday, cover charge
Roaring Social Decatur is located at 101 W. Ponce de Leon Ave. For more information, go to roaringsocialdecatur.com.
