Alix Perez and friends, including Monty, Trail, Visages, Submarine, and more, are back for 1985 Music’s end-of-year compilation, Fragment / 2.

New Zealand Label-head Alix Perez has spent the last decade steadily building 1985 Music, which will turn a decade old in 2026. This label is known not only for producing some of the highest-quality audio in the bass music realm, but also for its consistent sound that’s instantly recognizable across artists and genres

Alix Perez has undoubtedly nailed his formula for the label and hand-selects each talent he invites. Between standalone EPs and albums from resident artists,1985 Music often brings together a mix of artists for compilations like their Atlas and Codex series. In late 2024, they debuted Fragment / 1, and this week, they’ve just released its second edition to conclude 2025.

Fragment / 2 has arrived as a 12-track compilation featuring elements ranging from moody drums and dark dubstep to their signature soulful drum and bass. With returning artists and new ones, there’s a track for every listener on the compilation.

A brand-new artist to the imprint, Pruvan, opens Fragment / 2 with his moody hybrid-garage track, “Ronnie Elbows.” The Prague-based producer is behind the unique opening track that sets the scene for the collection, making his debut with 1985 Music. The track sets the collection off to a perfect start, too catchy to sit still. While Pruvan kicked things off for the project itself, 1985 veteran Submarine took the honors of releasing the first single in early November with his uplifting liquid drum-and-bass track, “You Do.”

Submarine’s fast, dreamy tune is one of only two of the aforementioned soulful offerings that melodic drum-and-bass fans can’t get enough of from 1985 Music. The other comes from none other than French producer Trail, which comes as no surprise to fans. His offering to Fragment / 2, “Sparkle,” couldn’t have a more fitting title, and sounds like pure happiness wrapped into a song.

Trail also teams up with 1985 favorites Monty and Visages on their collaboration, “Alright Alright.” Certainly not on the soulful side, this one features a darker twist within a unique 2-step drum pattern that could leave even the most seasoned listeners questioning the genre while head-nodding to the beat. Another artist who does this well is EPROM, who returns to the label in almost every compilation. His track “Operator” is for the experimental fans.

Another new face to the label, Sydney-based artist Killjoy, didn’t hold back with his offering “Badness,” whose classic, abrasive wobbles mimic those of an early-2000s dubstep producer. While he’s no stranger to the scene, there’s no doubt plenty of 1985 Music fans discovered him from this standout debut on Fragment / 2.

The project naturally couldn’t be complete without 2 solo tracks from Alix Perez. “Perception Disorder” is a sinister, bass-heavy 140 beat, and he matches the same dark energy, but faster, on his drum and bass track, “Lost Connection.” With Fragment / 2 being the perfect conclusion to 2025 and a representation of the label’s sound, there’s no telling what exciting releases and projects 1985 Music could have in store for their 10th-anniversary celebration next year.

Fragment / 2 is out everywhere now, so head to Spotify or your preferred platform to stream this new collection with your best set of speakers.
