After six feature films and a seventh on the way, there is little that Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have not accomplished together. Still, there is one thing that DiCaprio wishes he had done more during his collaborations with Scorsese.
The actor has made it clear that he is not interested in directing, believing he could not come close to the work that his mentor has created. However, reflecting on the past two decades of their partnership, DiCaprio said he wishes he learned more about how Scorsese directs.
“One of the only things I could say I would regret about our relationship, if anything, is that I’ve been so focused on what I’ve been doing as an actor,” DiCaprio told Scorsese at the “A Year in TIME” event on Dec. 10. “You know, you make these decisions, you play these characters, you try to get into the depth of their soul as much as you possibly can. And I would have loved to be much more of a voyeur if I could have been, to watch what you do behind the camera.”

Scorsese shared that he typically designs shots and goes through scripts alone. He praised DiCaprio for pulling out performances that “at times feel almost impossible” during their collaborations.
The duo first worked together on Gangs of New York in 2002. The last project they collaborated on was 2023’s Killers of the Flower Moon, which received 10 Oscar nominations including a Best Picture nod.
DiCaprio and Scorsese shared that they are gearing up for their seventh film, although they remained fairly tight-lipped on the details. They revealed that filming is expected to start in February.
Earlier this year, their long-awaited adaptation of The Devil in the White City, based on Erik Larson’s non-fiction book of the same name, was revived at 20th Century. The book features intertwined stories about architect Daniel Burnham, who oversaw the construction of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and serial killer H. H. Holmes, who lured fairgoers to their doom nearby.

The Devil in the White City has been in various stages of development since 2003. DiCaprio bought the rights to the book in 2010 and Scorsese was first attached to direct in 2015. It was later developed as a show for Hulu in 2019, but the project was later killed in 2023.
