Oakland First Fridays seeks sponsors as funding challenges force entertainment cuts

For centuries, the contributions of women to the fine arts were often relegated to the margins, their visibility clouded by systemic bias. While the art world has made strides toward equity, subtle glass ceilings remain. Women Painters of Washington (WPW) is one of the organizations working to elevate and empower women artists to reach new heights.

This ongoing push for recognition finds its latest expression in Tieton, where Boxx Gallery is turning these challenges into a celebration of creative strength. For the month of February, Boxx is hosting “Spoken in Color,” featuring WPW Eastern Washington Chapter. Displayed is a vibrant and captivating exhibition of voices aiming to increase the visibility of our state’s women artists. This powerful exhibition features 10 artists and 50 original works.

WPW Eastern Chapter artists participating in this show are Sara Cate (Yakima), Janet Fagan (Mazama), Ana Gresham (Yakima), Nena Howell (Wenatchee), Judy Kalin (Moses Lake), T Kurtz (Spokane), Elizabeth Montes de Oca (Yakima), Megan Perkins (Spokane), Terri Rice (Richland), Darcie Case Roberts (Yakima) and Gayle Scholl (Yakima).

Multi-media artist Ana Gresham, WPW Eastern Chapter Chairperson, says, “This show brings a unique opportunity to Boxx Gallery, a chance to see works from a group of professional women artists from across Eastern Washington – showcasing the talent, perspectives and creativity that our whole region has to offer. We are a fully volunteer run organization and we all take great pride in the work and camaraderie of the WPW. This show brings fresh voices to the Yakima Valley art scene and they are joined by some of the region’s stars. It will be a truly standout show!”

In its 90-plus year history, WPW has had over 1,000 members, many of whom have shaped contemporary art both nationally and abroad. Their stated mission is to empower professional women artists to create, exhibit and market their work while fostering art appreciation within their communities and beyond. WPW now has a prestigious network of 200 active members and remains a vital engine for professional empowerment.

Visit “Spoken in Color” to see an exhibition that isn’t just a display of professionalism and creativity; it is a celebration of artists who have claimed their space. Visitors can expect a diverse and colorful tapestry of mediums and styles, proving that while these women share a mission of mutual support, their artistic voices remain fiercely individual.

• Boxx Gallery is a non-profit art gallery and community gathering space in Tieton. Current hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Visit boxxgallery.com for more information about upcoming exhibits, workshops and more.
