The music video was filled with celebrity cameos, including an appearance from chat show host Graham Norton and a special voice-over from Cillian Murphy himself
Domhnall Gleeson has officially made his debut in a Taylor Swift music video!
The duo met on the Graham Norton Show last year, when they shared the couch with fellow Irish actor Cillian Murphy. Domhnall joked on the chat show that he was “hoping to get in a Taylor Swift music video”, which Taylor responded to with a surprised look. Now, the Grammy-winning American popstar has made his dream come true.
The video for Taylor’s new single, Opalite, off her record-breaking album, The Life of a Showgirl, also features Graham Norton, Lewis Capaldi, Greta Lee, and Jodie Turner-Smith, all of whom were on the chat show together. Cillian Murphy even made time in his busy schedule for a brief voice-over cameo. Domhnall plays a lonely man whose only companion is a prickly potted cactus, while a brunette down on her luck, Taylor, is best buddies with an inanimate rock. Both characters wind up together by using a spray of ‘Opalite’, a fix-all cure for instant happiness.
Taylor sings the catchy, upbeat lyrics: “But my Mama told me / It’s alright / You were dancing through the lightning strikes / Sleepless in the onyx night / But now the sky is opalite” as the pair do a couple’s photoshoot and enter a ’90s-themed dance competition.
The music video, written and directed by Taylor, ends on a sweet montage featuring footage from the Graham Norton show as the credits roll.
“I remember thinking I got ridiculously lucky with the group I was paired with. Cillian Murphy, Domhnall Gleeson, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Lewis Capaldi.” Taylor Swift said.
“All people whose work I’ve admired from afar. When we were all talking during the broadcast, Domhnall made a light hearted joke about wanting to be in one of my music videos. He’s Irish! He was joking! Except that in that moment during the interview, I was instantly struck with an *idea*”, the singer continued.
“And so a week later he received an email script I’d written for the Opalite video, where he was playing the starring role. I had this thought that it would be wild if all of our fellow guests on the Graham Norton show that night, including Graham himself, could be a part of it too. Like a school group project but for adults and it isn’t mandatory. To my delight, everyone from the show made the effort to time travel back to the 90’s with us and help with this video.”
Fans are loving the pair teaming up, calling it a ‘full circle moment’. One wrote: “He decided to audition in front of the whole world [on Graham Norton], and Taylor said, ‘I respect it'”.
Another posted: “Oh to meet Taylor Swift, tell her I want to be in her music video, and then she actually makes it happen.”
Brendan Gleeson’s son is no stranger to the world of music videos. The 42-year-old previously appeared in Hozier’s artsy video for De Selby Part 2, in which he starred as a shovel-wielding madman stuck in a time loop in the Wicklow Mountains.
