Teddy Swims gets called a “woke” Jelly Roll.
The R&B singer headlined the Super Bowl LX tailgate outside of Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Teddy performed hits, including “Lose Control,” to kick off the big game festivities, with fans waiting to see who will take home the Vince Lombardi Trophy, the New England Patriots or the Seattle Seahawks.
Teddy wore a leather vest with studs on the collar and shoulders, over a black shirt, leather pants and he tied the look together with a hat. As he sang his heart out to the crowd, many could not help but think that he resembled a “woke” Jelly Roll.
One person on X, formerly known as Twitter, wrote, “Teddy swims is everything jelly roll will never be.”
Another person wrote, “Teddy Swims is picking up what Jelly Roll dropped.”
A third person posted, “Teddy Swims is a woke Jelly Roll.” A fourth posted, “Teddy Swims >>>>>> Jelly Roll.”
This comes after Jelly Roll has received backlash over his answer when asked about the Super Bowl halftime show. Jelly Roll said the performance plans lacked one area — genre. This year, Bad Bunny is set to perform the game’s halftime show, making history as the first artist to perform a primarily Spanish-language set and the first Latin male artist to headline the show. This marks his return to the stage after previously appearing as a guest during the Shakira/Jennifer Lopez 2020 halftime show.
The country star, 41, admitted he was hoping to see something more to his liking. “I’ve been waiting on somebody to ask me a halftime performance question,” he said. However, he knows that location has a lot to do with the influence on artist selection.
“The Super Bowl could possibly come to Nashville in the next three to five years. We’re getting a new stadium, and I have a dream they do a country music-themed halftime show.”
The country star also didn’t comment on any of the politically angled controversy on that matter and even tried to distance himself from politics altogether.
Teddy Swims, whose real name is Jaten Collin Dimsdale, also tries to distance himself from political talk. The singer frames his advocacy around human rights, love, and unity rather than political affiliation. He has also actively spoken out against racism, donated to organizations like the NAACP and Atlanta Solidarity Fund, and addressed issues of white privilege in his music.
