Portsmouth to host Granite State New Horizons Music Summit

Staff reports
 |  Portsmouth Herald

Portsmouth Music and Arts Center will host the Granite State New Horizons Music Summit, a gathering of adult community concert bands from across New Hampshire for a full day of collaborative music‑making.

The annual event will bring together ensembles from the Lakes Region, Concord, Monadnock, and Portsmouth, according to a community announcement.Concert is open to the public

The community is invited to a combined concert at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 21 at Portsmouth Middle School. Donations are welcome.

The participating adult ensembles include the Monadnock New Horizons Band, the Concord Community Music School New Horizons Band, the Lakes Region New Horizons Band, and PMAC’s own New Horizons Band. Each group rehearses on its own ahead of the event, and on the day of the summit, musicians from all four programs will join forces as a single concert band to rehearse and perform a shared program.

This year’s concert will feature a mix of concert‑band repertoire, including a Sousa march and a Swahili folk hymn, with more than 60 musicians expected to take part.

“With more than 60 musicians playing together, the sound is immediately bigger—more depth, more energy,” said Russ Grazier, PMAC CEO and New Horizons band director. “It’s an exciting chance for the players to experience what a full concert band feels like: listening to more players, adjusting your balance, and being part of something you simply can’t create with a smaller group.”
